History
Avon was established in 1886 by David H. McConnell, a travelling book salesman. Whilst selling books, McConnell observed that customers were more interested in the free perfume samples he offered than the books themselves. Recognising this opportunity, he founded the California Perfume Company in New York.
One of his earliest and most influential decisions was hiring women as independent sales representatives at a time when female employment opportunities were severely limited. This innovative business model laid the foundation for Avon’s direct-selling network and enabled thousands of women to earn independent incomes.
In 1929, the company introduced the Avon brand name for one of its cosmetic lines. Due to the brand’s growing popularity, the California Perfume Company officially changed its corporate name to Avon in 1939.
Business Model
Avon became famous for its direct-selling approach, whereby independent representatives sold products directly to customers through personal relationships, catalogues and home demonstrations.
Today, the company combines traditional direct selling with:
- E-commerce
- Digital catalogues
- Social selling

- Online beauty consultation
- Independent beauty advisors
This hybrid model allows representatives to sell products both offline and online.
