History
Foundation and early years
Brembo was established in Paladina, near Bergamo, Italy, on 11 January 1961 as a small family-owned mechanical workshop.1 In its initial phase, the company focused on precision machining for industrial clients rather than the production of complete brake systems.1
A pivotal development occurred in 1964 when Italy was still importing brake discs from the United Kingdom. After a shipment intended for Alfa Romeo was damaged in transit, Brembo was commissioned to repair the components. Rather than merely fixing the damaged parts, the company proposed manufacturing the discs locally. Alfa Romeo accepted this proposal, marking Brembo’s transition from a machine shop into Italy’s first major domestic brake disc manufacturer.1
Motorcycle expansion and Formula One debut
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Brembo entered the motorcycle industry by developing complete braking systems for manufacturers such as Moto Guzzi and Laverda.1 These products helped establish the brand as a premium supplier for high-performance two-wheelers.
In 1975, Ferrari selected Brembo as the brake supplier for its Formula One cars.1 This partnership introduced the company to the highest level of motorsport and accelerated the development of advanced racing brake technologies.1
Growth and public listing
Throughout the 1980s, Brembo expanded rapidly, introducing innovations including the first aluminium automotive brake caliper, lightweight racing brake systems, carbon brake technology and high-performance motorcycle calipers.2 During this period, it also became an OEM supplier for international manufacturers such as BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Nissan and Chrysler.2
In 1995, Brembo was listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, securing greater financial resources for international expansion and research.2
Global expansion
Since the 1990s, Brembo has grown worldwide through new manufacturing plants, research centres and strategic acquisitions.3 Production facilities now operate across Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Mexico, the United States, China, India and Brazil.3 The company currently serves customers in more than 70 countries.3
Products
Brake calipers
Brembo’s brake calipers are perhaps its most recognisable product, featuring monobloc construction, aluminium alloy bodies, multi-piston designs, fixed caliper architecture and high heat resistance. The signature red Brembo caliper has become an icon of high-performance automobiles.
Brake discs and rotors
The company manufactures various types of brake discs, including cast iron rotors, floating rotors, drilled rotors, slotted rotors, carbon-ceramic discs and carbon-carbon racing discs.
Brake pads
Brake pads are designed for diverse applications ranging from daily driving and sports cars to racing and heavy-duty use.
Motorcycle braking systems
Motorcycle components include radial brake calipers, master cylinders, racing discs and clutch components.
Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCM)
Carbon ceramic brakes represent one of Brembo’s premium technologies. These systems offer significant weight savings compared to cast iron, exceptional heat resistance, extended service life, reduced brake fade and superior stopping power. They are commonly fitted to supercars and hypercars.
Electronic braking technology
Brembo has expanded into intelligent braking systems through technologies such as SENSIFY, which combines software, sensors, artificial intelligence and brake-by-wire concepts to optimise braking performance and safety.1
Motorsport
Brembo is among the most successful brake suppliers in racing history, providing systems for championships including Formula 1, MotoGP, World Superbike, Formula E, the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), IndyCar, NASCAR and various rally championships.1 Virtually every MotoGP team utilises Brembo braking systems, and the company has secured hundreds of world championship victories over decades of competition.1
OEM customers
Brembo supplies original equipment brakes to many of the world’s leading manufacturers, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Aston Martin, McLaren, Nissan, Chevrolet, Dodge, KTM, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha and Triumph.2 Many performance models feature Brembo brakes as factory-installed equipment.2
Design philosophy
The company emphasises four key principles: performance, safety, innovation and lightweight engineering. Products are designed to deliver shorter stopping distances, improved heat management, consistent pedal feel, greater durability and reduced unsprung weight.
Research and innovation
Brembo invests heavily in research and development, with notable innovations including aluminium monobloc calipers, radial motorcycle calipers, carbon-ceramic braking systems, lightweight racing brakes, AI-assisted brake control and brake-by-wire technology.1 The company has received international recognition for industrial design, including the Compasso d’Oro award for its carbon-ceramic brake system.1
Brand image
Brembo is considered one of the most prestigious names in the automotive sector, associated with racing heritage, Italian engineering, premium quality, high performance, reliability and luxury sports cars. The distinctive red brake caliper is widely recognised as a symbol of performance and is frequently imitated in the aftermarket.
Aftermarket business
Beyond supplying vehicle manufacturers, Brembo offers replacement and performance upgrade components for consumers, including brake pads, rotors, calipers, complete big brake kits (BBKs) and racing brake components. These products cater to daily driving, track days, motorsport and vehicle customisation.
Sustainability
In recent years, Brembo has broadened its focus to include lower-emission manufacturing, energy efficiency, sustainable materials, digital manufacturing and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) initiatives.3 Its stated long-term vision is “Shaping a Zero-Accident Future”, reflecting an emphasis on safer and smarter mobility.3
Legacy
From its origins as a small family workshop in northern Italy, Brembo has evolved into one of the most influential companies in automotive engineering.1 Its braking systems equip everything from everyday passenger cars to Formula 1 race cars and some of the world’s fastest supercars. With more than six decades of innovation, the Brembo name has become synonymous with premium braking performance, engineering excellence and motorsport success.1
