The Breakthrough: Schmidt–Cassegrain Telescopes

Celestron developed a technique involving extremely precise match plates to form Schmidt corrector lenses more consistently and at scale. This crucial innovation transformed the Schmidt–Cassegrain from a specialized or expensive instrument into a telescope design accessible to amateur astronomers at a much lower price point.
Brand Evolution
In January 1964, Celestron-Pacific advertised the Celestronic 20, a 20-inch Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope, in Sky & Telescope. Later that year, the company produced a 22-inch SCT and dropped “Pacific” from its name, becoming simply Celestron.
By 1969, the company had developed a family of Schmidt–Cassegrain telescopes ranging from approximately 6-inch to 22-inch apertures. These instruments became recognizable for their distinctive blue-and-white appearance.
The C8
If there is one product that defines Celestron’s history, it is the C8, an 8-inch (203 mm) Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope.
