History
Although Kendamil is relatively young as a consumer brand, its history goes back much further.
In 1962, a baby-formula manufacturing facility was established in Kendal in the English Lake District. The site was originally associated with Glaxo and subsequently became connected with major infant-nutrition businesses including Farley’s, Boots and Heinz.
Over the following decades, the Kendal facility developed substantial expertise in infant formula and became an important UK centre for infant-nutrition research and manufacturing.
In 2015, the McMahon family acquired the Kendal factory through Kendal Nutricare. The acquisition was intended to preserve the facility, its workforce and UK-based baby-formula manufacturing.
The following year, Kendamil was launched as a brand.
The name is essentially a combination of the company’s home and its product: Kendal + milk/formula β Kendamil. The company says the brand was named after the town of Kendal where it originated.
Ownership
Kendamil is produced by Kendal Nutricare Ltd., a family-owned British nutrition company headquartered in Kendal, Cumbria.
The McMahon family is central to the company’s modern history.
Ross McMahon, co-founder and father, became an important figure behind the company’s development. His sons are also involved in the business. The company’s philosophy combines traditional dairy farming and British manufacturing with modern infant-nutrition research.
Kendal Nutricare itself is larger than just the Kendamil consumer brand. Its manufacturing capabilities cover products ranging from infant formula and specialist nutritional formulations to adult nutrition products.
Formulation Principles
The biggest part of Kendamil’s identity is its whole-milk formulation.
Traditional infant formulas commonly use skimmed milk or milk-derived ingredients together with added vegetable fats. Kendamil instead emphasizes whole milk and whole-milk fats as an important component of its recipe.
The company argues that this approach provides naturally occurring components of milk fat, including milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), while giving the formula a naturally creamy character.
The company’s major formulation principles include:
- Whole milk fats
- British-sourced milk
- No palm oil
- No fish oil
- No corn syrup
- Vegetarian formulations
- Non-GMO ingredients
- Milk from grass-fed cows, according to Kendamil
- Organic options
- Goat-milk options
An important distinction: these are Kendamil’s formulation and sourcing claims; they should not automatically be interpreted as proof that Kendamil is nutritionally superior to every competing formula. Infant formulas sold legally in different countries have to meet their respective nutritional and safety regulations.
Whole milk vs. vegetable oils
This is probably the most recognizable part of Kendamil’s marketing.
Kendamil emphasizes that its formula uses whole milk as a source of fat, rather than relying exclusively on vegetable oils to provide the fat component.
The company says this approach allows it to reduce the amount of added vegetable oils while retaining naturally occurring milk-fat components.
This is one of the reasons Kendamil has developed a distinctive reputation among parents: rather than presenting itself simply as another infant-formula manufacturer, it markets the product around a particular “whole milk” philosophy.
However, “whole milk” does not mean that infant formula is simply powdered cow’s milk. Infant formula is a carefully formulated food in which milk ingredients are processed and combined with nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals to meet regulatory requirements.
No palm oil
Another major Kendamil selling point is that its standard formulas are palm-oil-free.
This has become an important part of the brand’s identity.
Kendamil argues that its use of whole-milk fat enables it to formulate its products without palm oil, while still achieving the required fat composition.
This is also connected to the company’s environmental positioning, although it is worth separating “palm-oil-free” from the broader question of environmental sustainability: the environmental impact of an infant formula depends on many factors, including dairy production, agricultural practices, energy use, transportation and packaging.
No fish oil
Kendamil also emphasizes that it doesn’t use fish oil in its formulas. Instead, its products use alternative sources of DHA, depending on the particular formulation and market.
This has helped distinguish Kendamil from some competing formulas because parents sometimes associate fish-oil-derived DHA with a noticeable fishy smell or taste.
Again, this is primarily an ingredient-source distinction, rather than meaning that DHA from one permitted source is automatically nutritionally superior to DHA from another.
Manufacturing
One of Kendamil’s strongest brand assets is its British manufacturing identity.
The company’s main manufacturing heritage is in Kendal, Cumbria, in the English Lake District. Kendamil says its milk is sourced from British farms, including farms associated with the Lake District and surrounding regions.
Kendamil describes the process as “farm to formula.”
Its manufacturing process involves:
- Milk arriving at the factory.
- Milk being tested for contaminants and quality.
- Pasteurisation.
- Standardisation and nutritional enrichment.
- Wet blending.
- Evaporation and drying.
- Additional dry blending where required.
- Quality-control testing.
- Packaging into cans.
Kendamil says that its farm-to-formula process can take approximately 10 hours from the beginning of processing to finished formula.
Product Portfolio
Kendamil has expanded considerably beyond its original formula.
Classic
The Classic range is the company’s mainstream cow’s-milk formula line.
It includes different stages corresponding to different ages and feeding stages, depending on the market. The exact products and formulations can vary between countries because infant-formula regulations differ internationally.
Organic
Kendamil also offers an Organic range.
The company launched Kendamil Organic in 2018 and positions it around organic milk and organic agricultural sourcing, while retaining the brand’s whole-milk philosophy.
Goat
The Goat range uses goat milk rather than cow milk.
It is one of Kendamil’s major product lines and is marketed as another option for parents looking for a different milk base.
Importantly, goat-milk formula is not the same thing as a treatment for cow’s-milk-protein allergy. Parents dealing with suspected allergy or other medical issues should follow advice from a pediatrician or other qualified healthcare professional.
Weaning and toddler products
Kendamil has also expanded into products associated with later stages of childhood nutrition, including weaning cereals, porridges and toddler-oriented nutrition products.
International Expansion
Kendamil started as a relatively small British formula brand but has become an international business.
The company records a number of significant expansion milestones:
- 2016: Kendamil brand launched.
- 2016: Products began appearing in major UK retail channels.
- 2018: Kendamil received approval to sell in China.
- 2019: Kendamil launched in Singapore.
- 2020: Kendal Nutricare received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
- 2022: Kendamil entered the US market during the American infant-formula shortage.
- 2023: The company reported that Kendamil had become the fastest-growing formula brand in the US.
- 2024: Kendamil expanded into Canada.
- 2024: Kendakids toddler nutrition products launched in the US.
The American expansion is particularly notable.
2022 US Infant-Formula Shortage
One of the most significant events in Kendamil’s history happened in 2022, when the United States experienced a major infant-formula shortage.
As part of the US government’s emergency response, Kendamil was among the European manufacturers whose formula was brought into the United States under the “Operation Fly Formula” initiative.
Kendal Nutricare says it supplied approximately 2 million cans of infant formula to the United States during the shortage.
The episode dramatically increased Kendamil’s visibility in the American market.
It went from being a relatively niche British brand to becoming a recognizable formula brand among American parents.
Royal Recognition
Kendamil’s corporate history also includes recognition from the British government.
In 2020, Kendal Nutricare received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, recognizing its contribution to UK business.
Kendamil also says that its products reached Buckingham Palace within the first year after the brand was launched.
In 2024, co-founder Ross McMahon received an MBE from King Charles III for services to the local community and international trade.
Sustainability
Sustainability is another major part of Kendamil’s modern branding.
The company says its factory uses renewable energy and emphasizes locally sourced milk, traceability and reduced environmental impact.
Its sustainability philosophy includes:
- Local/British milk sourcing
- Working with family farms
- Renewable energy at its factory
- Avoiding palm oil
- Minimizing unnecessary processing
- Emphasis on traceability
- Agricultural and animal-welfare considerations
Kendamil describes this philosophy as trying to combine nature, British farming and modern scientific research.
Research and Development
Despite its family-business image, Kendamil is not simply a traditional dairy company.
Its manufacturing operation has a substantial technical infrastructure involving:
- Food scientists
- Laboratory scientists
- Microbiologists
- Process engineers
- Nutrition specialists
- Quality-assurance personnel
- Research and development staff
Kendamil says its formulas are developed at its Lake District operation and that its R&D team has decades of experience in infant-formula research.
The broader Kendal manufacturing facility has historically produced nutrition products for major companies including GSK, Boots, Heinz, Meiji and Nutricia, giving the site a much longer industrial history than the Kendamil brand itself.
Quality and Certifications
Kendamil’s manufacturing operation states that it works under a range of food-safety and quality standards.
Kendal Nutricare lists certifications and approvals including:
- BRC Grade AA
- Soil Association Organic
- Halal
- Super-Kosher
- Health and safety certification
- Environmental Health Officer approval
The company also says its manufacturing and product-development processes take account of international nutritional frameworks and regulations.
Presence in Singapore
Kendamil has had a presence in Singapore since March 2019. 3
The Singapore operation emphasizes the same major selling points as the global brand:
British-made, whole milk, palm-oil-free and locally sourced British milk.
The Singapore product range includes Classic and Goat products, among others.
Because infant-formula composition and labeling are regulated locally, the Singapore version of a Kendamil product should be treated as its own market-specific formulation rather than assuming it is identical to a UK or US version.
Brand Positioning
If you look at Kendamil from a marketing perspective, the brand is built around several interconnected ideas:
π¬π§ British
The company strongly emphasizes its British ownership, British farms and British manufacturing.
π₯ Whole milk
Whole-milk fat is arguably the brand’s most important product differentiator.
πΏ Natural ingredients
Kendamil’s communication emphasizes recognizable dairy ingredients, minimal unnecessary processing and farming provenance.
π« Palm-oil-free
This is one of the easiest features for consumers to understand and compare.
π British farming
The brand connects infant nutrition with local dairy farms and grass-fed cattle.
π¨βπ©βπ¦ Family business
The McMahon family’s involvement gives Kendamil a very different corporate image from multinational formula companies.
π International but British
Interestingly, Kendamil’s identity is simultaneously very local and very international: the brand is deeply associated with one town in Cumbria but sells its products across numerous countries.
Competitive Position
The infant-formula market is dominated by large multinational nutrition companies. Kendamil’s strategy is therefore somewhat unusual.
Instead of trying to compete primarily on corporate scale, it differentiates itself through:
British origin + whole milk + palm-oil-free formulation + family ownership + premium positioning.
This gives it a particularly strong identity among consumers who care about ingredient sourcing and manufacturing provenance.
Its growth in the US after 2022 demonstrated that the strategy could work outside Britain as well.
Important Caveats
A good “wiki-style” overview should also distinguish marketing claims from medical conclusions.
Kendamil’s use of whole milk, absence of palm oil and use of particular fat sources make its formulation distinctive. But that does not by itself establish that Kendamil is universally healthier or better than competing legally regulated infant formulas.
Likewise:
- Palm-oil-free does not automatically mean nutritionally superior.
- Goat formula is not automatically appropriate for babies with milk-protein allergy.
- “Natural” ingredients do not necessarily mean medically superior.
- Different countries can have different Kendamil recipes.
- Infant formula should be prepared according to the instructions for the specific market/product.
- Breast milk remains the biological reference standard for infant feeding, while properly regulated infant formula is an alternative when breastfeeding isn’t possible or isn’t chosen. Kendamil itself acknowledges breast milk as the gold standard.
