History
Foundation (1930)
LAMY was established in 1930 by Josef Lamy, who had previously worked for the American pen company Parker. Rather than starting from scratch, he acquired the Orthos fountain pen factory in Heidelberg and began manufacturing fountain pens under the Orthos and later ARTUS brands. Throughout the 1930s, the company steadily expanded, producing hundreds of thousands of pens annually.
Birth of the LAMY Brand (1966)
The company’s defining moment came in 1966 with the introduction of the LAMY 2000, designed by Gerd A. Müller. Unlike traditional luxury fountain pens, the LAMY 2000 embraced the Bauhaus principle that form follows function. The pen featured a Makrolon fibreglass body, brushed stainless steel accents, a hidden piston filling system, an integrated clip, and a minimalist design. The LAMY 2000 became an international design icon and established what is now known as LAMY Design. Even decades later, it remains one of the company’s flagship products.
International Expansion
Beginning in the 1970s and accelerating in the 1980s, LAMY expanded internationally whilst maintaining production solely in Germany. The company invested heavily in in-house manufacturing, precision engineering, injection moulding, ink production, and quality control. Unlike many competitors, LAMY chose not to outsource manufacturing overseas, helping build its reputation for consistency and reliability.
Acquisition (2024)
In February 2024, ownership of LAMY transferred to Mitsubishi Pencil Company, the Japanese manufacturer behind the uni and POSCA brands. LAMY stated that production remains in Heidelberg, products continue to be made in Germany, and the existing design philosophy remains unchanged. The acquisition primarily strengthens global distribution and future growth.
Design Philosophy
LAMY is one of the world’s best-known examples of industrial functional design. Its products prioritise simplicity, ergonomics, durability, practicality, and a timeless appearance. The company deliberately avoids excessive decoration, believing that good design should clearly express a product’s purpose. Its philosophy draws strong inspiration from Bauhaus, German industrial design, and Braun’s design language. Rather than following fashion trends, LAMY aims to create products that remain relevant for decades.
Manufacturing
One of LAMY’s defining characteristics is that nearly all production occurs in Heidelberg, Germany. Production combines CNC machining, injection moulding, automated precision manufacturing, hand assembly, and manual quality inspection. This centralised manufacturing supports the company’s “Made in Germany” quality standards.

Key aspects of its sustainability approach include durable construction, replaceable nibs, refillable fountain pens, long product life cycles, and local manufacturing to maintain quality control. The company views a long-lasting product as a core part of sustainable design.
Global Presence
Today, LAMY products are sold in more than 80 countries, at over 15,600 retail locations, and in around 200 dedicated LAMY stores. The brand is especially popular in Germany, Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Europe, and North America.
Brand Identity
LAMY positions itself not simply as a pen manufacturer but as a creator of “thinking tools.” Its products are intended to support handwriting, creativity, sketching, note-taking, design work, and personal expression. This philosophy reflects the company’s belief that writing instruments remain meaningful even in a digital world.
Legacy
Over more than 90 years, LAMY has grown from a small Heidelberg pen factory into one of the world’s leading writing instrument brands. The introduction of the LAMY 2000 in 1966 redefined modern pen design, whilst the LAMY safari became one of the best-selling fountain pens ever made. Today, the company continues to combine German engineering, Bauhaus-inspired design, and in-house manufacturing, maintaining its reputation for producing durable, functional writing instruments that appeal to students, professionals, designers, and collectors worldwide.
