History
The origins of Lay’s date back to 1932, when Herman W. Lay, a travelling salesman from Nashville, Tennessee, began selling potato chips from the boot of his car. Initially distributing products made by the Barrett Potato Chip Company, Lay eventually acquired the business in 1939, establishing H.W. Lay & Company.
In 1944, the company officially adopted the Lay’s Potato Chips name and became one of the first snack food manufacturers to advertise on television.
A significant milestone occurred in 1961 when H.W. Lay & Company merged with The Frito Company to form Frito-Lay, Inc. Four years later, in 1965, Frito-Lay merged with Pepsi-Cola to create PepsiCo, integrating Lay’s into one of the world’s largest food and beverage corporations.1

The standard production process comprises:

PepsiCo collaborates with more than 100 family-owned farms in North America and sources potatoes and other agricultural ingredients from growers in numerous countries.1
Branding and Marketing
Lay’s is instantly recognisable by its bright yellow packaging, which features a red ribbon logo and a sun-inspired design.
Over the decades, the brand has launched numerous advertising campaigns, celebrity endorsements, and flavour contests. One of its most enduring slogans is:
“Betcha can’t eat just one.”
More recently, Lay’s has emphasised that its chips are made from real potatoes, updating its packaging and visual identity to highlight its agricultural origins.1
Innovation
Lay’s regularly introduces new products to maintain market relevance, including:
- Limited-edition flavours
- Country-exclusive recipes
- Seasonal products
- Health-oriented variations such as Baked Lay’s and reduced-fat options
The company also conducts flavour competitions inviting consumers to submit new ideas, some of which are adopted as permanent additions to the product line.1
Sustainability
PepsiCo has integrated Lay’s into its broader sustainability initiatives, which include:
- Supporting sustainable potato farming
- Improving water efficiency
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Increasing recyclable and sustainable packaging
- Working directly with agricultural suppliers to improve crop production
These efforts form part of PepsiCo’s long-term environmental strategy.1
Recent Developments
In 2025, Lay’s unveiled its most significant global brand redesign in nearly a century. The updated packaging places greater emphasis on potatoes and farm imagery whilst retaining the brand’s iconic logo. In the United States, PepsiCo also announced ingredient changes aimed at removing artificial flavours and colours from core Lay’s products.1
Legacy
From a small enterprise started by Herman Lay during the Great Depression, Lay’s has evolved into one of the most recognisable snack brands worldwide. Its combination of consistent quality, localised flavours, and global distribution has established it as a leading name in the potato chip industry for more than 90 years.1
