History
OXO was founded in 1990 by entrepreneur Sam Farber, who had previously established the housewares company Copco.
The inspiration behind OXO stemmed from a simple everyday problem. While cooking with his wife, Betsey Farber, who had mild arthritis, Sam noticed that traditional metal vegetable peelers were uncomfortable and difficult for her to use. Rather than designing a product solely for people with arthritis, he envisioned tools that would be easier and more comfortable for everyone.
This idea led to the creation of the first Good Grips Swivel Peeler, featuring:
- A large ergonomic handle
- Soft rubber grip
- Non-slip surface
- Stainless steel blade
The peeler quickly became a commercial success and established OXO as a pioneer in ergonomic kitchen design.2
Philosophy
OXO’s guiding philosophy is: “Better. Guaranteed.”
The company believes that even ordinary household tools can be redesigned to become more comfortable, efficient, easier to use, durable, and inclusive. Rather than adding unnecessary features, OXO focuses on solving real everyday problems through thoughtful design.3
Universal Design
One of OXO’s defining principles is Universal Design. Instead of creating products specifically for people with disabilities, OXO designs products that work well for the widest possible range of users, including seniors, children, people with arthritis, left-handed users, professional chefs, and home cooks. This inclusive approach has become one of the company’s core design philosophies.4

Its key features include comfortable oversized handles, pressure-reducing grip, wet or dry usability, long-lasting construction, and professional-quality performance. The Good Grips line has expanded from a single peeler to hundreds of products.7
Innovation process
OXO emphasises observation-driven product development. Designers study how people use everyday tools, identify pain points, and refine products through extensive prototyping and user testing. According to the company, if a product cannot be made meaningfully better, it is not developed.8
Sustainability
OXO has increased its sustainability efforts by designing durable, long-lasting products, reducing unnecessary packaging, supporting environmental initiatives through 1% for the Planet, and encouraging products that help reduce household food waste. The company also supports charitable organisations, including Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, to which it has donated millions of dollars over the years.9
Ownership
OXO has changed ownership several times since its founding. Today, it is a subsidiary of Helen of Troy Limited, a global consumer products company that also owns brands in health, beauty, and home categories.10
