Pilot was established in 1918 as Namiki Manufacturing Company by Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada, two graduates of the Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine who shared a vision of creating writing instruments that Japan could proudly introduce to the world. After successfully developing one of Japan’s first domestically produced, world-class fountain pens, they founded the company to manufacture high-quality writing instruments.12

Origin of the name

The name “Pilot” derives from the nautical term referring to the lead ship or navigator that guides others. As former seafarers, the founders chose the name to symbolise their ambition to lead the writing instrument industry through innovation and quality.12

Early international expansion

Unlike many Japanese manufacturers of the era, Pilot expanded internationally at an early stage. By 1926, the company had established offices in New York, London, Shanghai and Singapore. This global strategy laid the foundation for Pilot’s international presence that continues today.3

Pilot is considered one of the world’s premier fountain pen manufacturers. Popular series include Custom 74, Custom Heritage 91, Custom Heritage 92, Custom 823, Custom Urushi, Elite 95S, Falcon, Justus 95, Kakuno, Metropolitan (MR), Prera, Explorer, Capless / Vanishing Point and Decimo. The company also produces luxury fountain pens under the Namiki brand, featuring traditional Japanese Maki-e lacquer artwork.12

Gel pens

Pilot revolutionised gel ink technology with products such as G-2, Juice, Juice Up, Hi-Tec-C and Hi-Tec-C Coleto. These pens are known for smooth writing, rich colours, fine line precision and long-lasting ink.12

Rollerball pens

Popular models include Precise V5, Precise V7, Hi-Tecpoint and VBall. These are valued for their liquid ink, consistent flow and precise lines.2

Ballpoint pens

Well-known series include Acroball, Better Ballpoint, Super Grip, BPS and EasyTouch. Pilot’s Acro Ink is designed to combine the smoothness of gel ink with the permanence of oil-based ink.3

Mechanical pencils

Popular models include Dr. Grip, S20, S30 and The Shaker (FureFure). These products are designed for comfort and precision, especially during long writing sessions.3

Markers and specialty pens

Pilot also manufactures whiteboard markers, permanent markers, brush pens, calligraphy pens, highlighters and fine liners. These are widely used in education, offices and creative work.

Pilot has introduced numerous industry firsts throughout its history.

1963 – Capless fountain pen

Pilot released the Capless, recognised as the world’s first retractable fountain pen without a removable cap. It remains one of the company’s flagship products.3

1977 – Multifunction pen

The company introduced the 2+1, combining two ballpoint pens and a mechanical pencil into one instrument.3

1991 – Dr. Grip

The ergonomic Dr. Grip series was designed to reduce writing fatigue and became highly popular worldwide.3

1994 – Hi-Tec-C

The Hi-Tec-C became famous for its ultra-fine needle-point writing and vibrant gel ink.3

1997 – G-2

Pilot launched the G-2, which grew into one of the world’s best-selling gel pens.12

2006 – Frixion

Pilot introduced Frixion, an erasable pen using thermosensitive ink that disappears through friction-generated heat. It became one of the company’s most successful products globally.3

Pilot has expanded its environmental initiatives by using recycled plastics in selected products, developing refillable pens, promoting refill systems to reduce waste and introducing eco-focused product lines such as Begreen. These efforts aim to reduce environmental impact while maintaining product quality.3
