History
2001: The beginning
SteelSeries originated in Copenhagen, Denmark, under the name Icemat. Founder Jacob Wolff-Petersen identified a recurring issue among competitive Counter-Strike players: traditional cloth mousepads soiled quickly and compromised mouse precision. To address this, he launched the Icemat, the world’s first commercially successful glass gaming mousepad engineered specifically for precision gameplay. The product gained significant traction among professional FPS players and established the foundation for the company.2
2007: Becoming SteelSeries
As the business expanded beyond mousepads, it rebranded from Icemat to SteelSeries. This change reflected a broader strategic vision to produce comprehensive gaming equipment rather than specialising in a single product category. During this period, the company introduced gaming mice, keyboards, headsets, and the SteelSeries Engine software suite. This era also marked SteelSeries’ increasing involvement in the esports ecosystem.12
Expansion into esports
SteelSeries was among the first gaming hardware manufacturers to collaborate directly with professional esports athletes. Rather than merely sponsoring teams, the company engaged professional players throughout the product development cycle. This included testing prototypes, refining ergonomics, tuning sensors, and enhancing performance based on competitive feedback. Over the years, SteelSeries has partnered with numerous esports organisations and tournaments, adopting the philosophy: “Designed by gamers, for gamers.”2
2021 acquisition
In October 2021, the Danish audio company GN Store Nord acquired SteelSeries. This acquisition enabled SteelSeries to integrate its gaming expertise with GN’s proficiency in premium audio technologies, accelerating innovation in gaming headsets and audio software.1
Philosophy
SteelSeries adheres to a central mission of creating products that enhance competitive gaming performance. Rather than prioritising aesthetics alone, the company emphasises precision, comfort, durability, low latency, and professional-grade performance. Its longstanding slogan is “For Glory”, whilst earlier marketing campaigns featured the tagline “Winning Is Everything.”2
