About Tai Hua
Overview
Tai Hua Food Industries, commonly known by its consumer brand Tai Hua (大华), is a Singaporean food manufacturer best known for soy sauce and Asian cooking sauces. Founded in the post-war period, the company grew from a small family-run sauce business into one of Singapore’s established soy-sauce producers, with products sold domestically and exported internationally.
The company operates under the name Tai Hua Food Industries Pte Ltd 1. Its current facility is located at 12 Jalan Besut, Singapore 619566. The managing director is Pek Ee Perh Thomas, a descendant of the founding family 2.
Origins: 1947
Tai Hua traces its origins to 1947, when Pek Cheng Chuan, together with his wife Ng Siew Kim, established the business in Singapore. Historical accounts place its early factory at Pearl’s Hill in Chinatown. Pek had acquired a sauce factory there and developed the business around the production of soy sauce.
The company’s beginnings were characteristic of Singapore’s mid-20th-century soy-sauce industry. At the time, sauce-making was dominated by small family businesses, many of which were established by Chinese immigrants and operated relatively small factories. Soy sauce was traditionally produced through fermentation involving soybeans, wheat, salt and water 3.
There is some variation in published historical dates: Tai Hua’s own corporate material and Singapore government sources consistently identify 1947 as the founding year, while one historical brand case study describes the start as 1949. The company’s official history and Singapore industry sources use 1947.
From traditional production to modernization
For its early decades, Tai Hua operated in the traditional sauce-making environment. As the business expanded, however, maintaining consistent quality and increasing production became increasingly important.
A major change came in 1984, when the company moved to its present location and invested heavily in modernizing its production process. Tai Hua says it moved away from the traditional tray-and-jar production method toward more technologically advanced manufacturing, with monitoring and controls designed to improve consistency.
This transition is important to understanding Tai Hua’s identity: the company has generally positioned itself between traditional Chinese sauce-making heritage and industrial-scale modern food manufacturing.
Expansion overseas
During the 1990s, Tai Hua began pursuing international markets more aggressively.
In 1995, management decided to target mainstream Western markets, particularly Europe. The company developed ready-to-cook and braising sauces aimed at convenience-oriented cooking and introduced a new logo and packaging design. These products were presented internationally at the 1997 ANUGA Food Fair and subsequently introduced into Singapore’s local market in 1998.
Tai Hua subsequently participated in major international food exhibitions including SIAL, ANUGA, Food & Hotel Asia and Gulfood, helping it build relationships with overseas distributors and food-service customers.
By recent industry profiles, Tai Hua’s products are exported to markets across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and Oceania.
Products
Although soy sauce is the product most closely associated with Tai Hua, the company is broader than a single-product soy-sauce manufacturer. Its product portfolio includes:
- Light soy sauce
- Dark soy sauce
- Reduced-salt soy sauce
- Seafood soy sauce
- Braising sauces
- Ready-to-cook sauces
- Oyster sauce
- Teriyaki sauce
- Sweet sauce
- Vinegar
- Preserved soy beans
- Other Asian cooking condiments
Tai Hua’s own product catalogue describes its soy sauce as a traditionally Chinese-flavoured sauce naturally brewed from soybeans, wheat flour, water and salt.
Singapore’s NTUC FairPrice currently lists a sizeable Tai Hua range, including standard, special and superior light/dark soy sauces, reduced-salt products, seafood soy sauce, oyster sauce, teriyaki sauce and other condiments 4.
Soy Sauce Varieties
Light soy sauce
Tai Hua’s light soy sauce is primarily intended for seasoning and flavour enhancement. It can be used in stir-fries, soups, marinades, seafood dishes and as a table condiment. The company produces several grades, including Standard, Special and Superior, reflecting different consumer and food-service requirements.
Dark soy sauce
Dark soy sauce is generally used more for colour, richness and sweetness, particularly in braised dishes, noodles, rice dishes and other Chinese-style cooking. Tai Hua similarly offers multiple grades of dark soy sauce.
Reduced-salt products
Tai Hua has also developed lower-sodium products as part of the changing health and dietary requirements of consumers. Its Reduced Salt Light Soy Sauce is marketed as having 35% less sodium than its regular light soy sauce, while its Seafood Soy Sauce is described as 25% lower in sodium than regular light soy sauce.
Some Tai Hua products have also appeared on Singapore’s Health Promotion Board product lists, including its reduced-salt and seafood soy sauces.
Manufacturing and Quality
A major part of Tai Hua’s brand identity is the combination of traditional flavour with modern production technology. The company describes its products as naturally brewed and emphasizes the use of selected ingredients, while its manufacturing history shows substantial investment in automation, quality controls and food-safety systems.
This is particularly significant because Singapore’s traditional soy-sauce industry historically depended heavily on manual processes, earthenware vessels and lengthy fermentation. Modern factories such as Tai Hua’s have adopted controlled production environments and machinery to achieve greater consistency and scale.
Certifications
Tai Hua places considerable emphasis on food safety and quality certification. Industry sources identify certifications including:
- HACCP
- ISO 22000
- FSSC 22000
- Halal
The company has also promoted its quality-management and food-safety credentials as part of its international-market strategy. Its older corporate material additionally cites ISO 9001 and other historical certifications/recognitions.
International Presence
Tai Hua is not exclusively a Singapore retail brand. The company says it exports its products to more than 30 countries, while Singapore food-industry sources list markets including Australia, Brunei, Bahrain, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Myanmar, Lebanon, the Philippines, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Tahiti, the UAE and the United States.
Its international business also extends beyond selling bottles under the Tai Hua name. The company supplies raw sauces to other food manufacturers and provides co-packing/private-label services, allowing other companies to market products manufactured by Tai Hua.
As of 2026, Tai Hua remains an active Singapore food manufacturer and continues to exhibit internationally; for example, Tai Hua was listed as an exhibitor/brand at Gulfood 2026 6.
Corporate Structure
The operating company is Tai Hua Food Industries Pte Ltd. Singapore corporate records identify it as a private company incorporated in 1950, while the business itself traces its operating history to 1947 5.
The company remains family-associated. Pek Ee Perh Thomas, a descendant of the founding family, has served as managing director and has been closely associated with the company’s modernization and international expansion. Singapore’s National Heritage Board’s documentation on soy-sauce making identifies him as the CEO of Tai Hua and describes the company as family-managed.
Brand Positioning and Heritage
Tai Hua’s branding revolves around several ideas:
- Singapore heritage: The company emphasizes its long history dating back to 1947 and its roots in Singapore’s traditional sauce-making industry.
- Traditional taste: Its soy sauces are marketed around traditional Chinese flavour profiles and naturally brewed production.
- Modern technology: Rather than presenting itself as an entirely artisanal producer, Tai Hua stresses modern manufacturing, quality control and food-safety systems.
- Accessibility: The brand is positioned for ordinary household cooking as well as restaurants, caterers, institutions and food manufacturers.
- International Asian food brand: Its stated ambition has historically been to make Tai Hua soy sauce available wherever there is a Chinese or Asian community.
Tai Hua operates on a B2C + B2B model. For consumers, it sells bottled sauces through supermarkets and other retail channels. For businesses, it supplies products for restaurants, caterers, food manufacturers, institutional kitchens, food-service distributors, and private-label/OEM customers. This gives Tai Hua a somewhat different business profile from a purely consumer-facing sauce brand. Its products can appear under the Tai Hua name, while its manufacturing capabilities can also sit behind other brands.
From a cultural-history perspective, Tai Hua represents more than just a supermarket condiment. It is part of the history of Singapore’s Chinese food manufacturing industry. The industry’s development mirrors Singapore’s broader transformation: small immigrant family business → traditional sauce factory → mechanization → modern food manufacturer → export-oriented Asian food brand.
Awards and Recognition
Tai Hua has received various forms of industry and brand recognition over the years. Enterprise Singapore’s brand profile describes it as having received recognition including the Singapore Promising Brand Award, Heritage Brand Awards and Asian Star Packaging Awards, as well as recognition associated with Singapore’s Tasty Singapore programme.
The company’s older promotional material also records participation in Singapore food-safety and quality programmes and various certifications.
