Origin of the Name
The acronym “TRW” derives from the names Thompson, Ramo, and Wooldridge.
The corporate lineage is complex, as the modern brand evolved from several entities rather than being founded as a single aftermarket company. A key predecessor was Thompson Products, an American manufacturer originating from the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. Thompson Products initially produced automotive valves before expanding into aircraft and aerospace components.2
In the 1950s, Thompson Products merged with Ramo-Wooldridge, a firm founded by scientists Simon Ramo and Dean Wooldridge. This combination created the identity Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, shortened to TRW. The resulting corporation became a major industrial entity involved in:
- Automotive components
- Aerospace
- Electronics
- Space technology
- Defense
- Information services
Historically, therefore, TRW was significantly more than just an automotive parts supplier.3
Automotive Heritage
Automotive engineering has been central to TRW’s history. Predecessor companies contributed to technologies including engine valves, steering, suspension, braking systems, airbags, seat belts, driver-assistance features, and electronic vehicle-control systems. The company gained particular significance in automotive safety and chassis technology.
This historical foundation informs the modern brand’s positioning around “Premium quality for maximum safety.”4
TRW Automotive Holdings
A pivotal moment occurred in 2002, when the original TRW Inc. was acquired by Northrop Grumman. Consequently, the automotive business was separated to form TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., headquartered in Livonia, Michigan. This new entity focused exclusively on automotive technology and became a major global supplier, providing braking, steering, suspension, occupant safety, and electronic systems to vehicle manufacturers worldwide.
At its peak, TRW Automotive employed tens of thousands of people across numerous countries.5
Acquisition by ZF
The next significant milestone arrived in 2015, when German supplier ZF Friedrichshafen acquired TRW Automotive. This transaction consolidated two major automotive technology groups:
ZF
- Driveline
- Transmission
- Chassis
- Mobility technology
TRW
- Braking
- Steering
- Vehicle safety
- Driver assistance
- Occupant protection
ZF stated that the integration strengthened its technology portfolio in areas such as autonomous driving, vehicle safety, and efficiency.6
After the acquisition, TRW ceased to exist as an independent automotive corporation but continued as a product and aftermarket brand. It is important to note that TRW today is primarily a brand within ZF, distinct from the former independent TRW Automotive entity.
Current Product Portfolio
Today, TRW sits within ZF Aftermarket, which includes brands such as ZF, LEMFÖRDER, SACHS, TRW, and WABCO. ZF positions TRW specifically around safety and performance.
Braking
Braking remains the category most strongly associated with TRW. The product range includes brake discs/rotors, pads, calipers, shoes, drums, hoses, boosters, ABS-related components, repair kits, and parking-brake components. In 2025, ZF reported that TRW offered more than 18,000 braking parts, covering conventional, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
Steering and Suspension
TRW produces aftermarket components such as tie rods, ball joints, control arms, steering linkage, and other chassis parts. ZF continues to expand this range, including updates to control arms, ball joints, and tie rods.
Automotive Safety
Leveraging historical expertise, the wider TRW engineering heritage encompasses airbag systems, seat-belt systems, electronic safety controls, stability control, and driver assistance. Much of this original technology is now integrated into ZF’s broader portfolio rather than operating as an independent TRW company.7
OEM Technology Connection
A distinctive characteristic of TRW is its connection to original-equipment (OE) engineering. ZF supplies TRW braking systems as an OE partner to more than 55 major global vehicle manufacturers. Additionally, TRW braking technology is utilized on more than half of rear axle systems worldwide. This allows the brand to position itself differently from generic aftermarket manufacturers, leveraging technologies developed for vehicle factories and making them available as replacement components.8
Focus on Brakes and EV Technology
Braking is arguably where the modern TRW identity is strongest. Key milestones include the Colette brake caliper, early four-wheel ABS development, advanced brake-control technologies, and modern brake-by-wire developments. ZF continues to develop products for conventional, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
An example is the TRW Electric Brake Booster, designed for electrified vehicles where traditional vacuum-assisted braking is less suitable. Furthermore, the TRW Electric Blue brake pads are specifically engineered for hybrid and electric vehicles to address issues such as noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), which can be more noticeable in EVs due to lower drivetrain noise and regenerative braking patterns.9
Motorcycle Components
TRW also maintains a substantial motorcycle aftermarket business. Products include brake discs, pads, clutch components, handlebars, levers, rear sets, lowering kits, jack-up kits, and accessories. ZF describes TRW as a major spare-parts and accessories brand covering motorcycles, scooters, enduros, superbikes, trikes, and quads.
Quality Positioning
TRW positions itself as a premium aftermarket brand, centered on three values described by ZF:
- Energy: Innovation, product development, and customer focus.
- Excellence: Attention to engineering, manufacturing, and relationships.
- Empathy: Understanding the needs of workshops, technicians, and customers.
The strategy emphasizes engineering quality over low-cost production. For instance, TRW braking components undergo end-of-line testing using in-house hardware and software. Coated brake discs feature black coatings that provide corrosion protection against water, road salt, and temperature changes.
Distinction Between Brands
Confusion often arises between ZF and TRW in parts catalogues. While related, they are distinct brands within the same group:
ZF Group

ZF Aftermarket
↓
TRW / LEMFÖRDER / SACHS / WABCO / ZF
TRW remains a recognizable individual brand within the ZF portfolio, used for specific areas of automotive expertise and market positioning.
Similarly, there is a distinction between historical TRW Automotive and modern TRW:
| Historical TRW Automotive | Modern TRW |
|---|---|
| Independent automotive company | Brand within ZF |
| Existed as a corporation from 2002–2015 | Still active |
| Supplied OEM vehicle systems | Represented through ZF’s product/aftermarket businesses |
| Large global corporate organization | Brand within ZF Aftermarket |
| Automotive engineering company | Automotive aftermarket and technology brand |
| Acquired by ZF in 2015 | Owned/managed within ZF |
When encountering TRW brake pads or TRW suspension parts today, these are generally products of the TRW brand under ZF Aftermarket, not the old independent corporation.
Global Presence
ZF Aftermarket operates globally, reporting business in 115 countries through logistics centers, offices, remanufacturing sites, and partner networks. TRW products are distributed across Europe, North America, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. Availability varies by country.
Summary
TRW is a historic automotive engineering and aftermarket brand with roots extending back more than a century to American industrial companies involved in automotive, aerospace, and advanced technology. After the original TRW grew into a major global corporation and its automotive division became TRW Automotive, the latter was acquired by ZF Friedrichshafen in 2015. While the independent company disappeared into the ZF Group, the TRW name survived as a major aftermarket brand. Today, TRW is part of ZF Aftermarket and is recognized for premium braking, steering, suspension, chassis, safety, and motorcycle components, with increasing emphasis on hybrid and electric-vehicle technologies.
