History
Womanizer’s origins go back to southern Bavaria, where inventor Michael Lenke and his wife Brigitte Lenke became interested in the limitations of conventional sex toys and the difficulties many women experience with orgasm. According to the company, research into female sexual pleasure led Lenke to focus particularly on the importance of clitoral stimulation.
The couple spent roughly two years experimenting with prototypes. The early concept reportedly involved adapting an aquarium pump to generate the air-pressure sensation that ultimately became the basis of Womanizer’s technology. 1
In 2014, the first Womanizer product was introduced. It used the company’s newly developed Pleasure Air Technology, establishing the basic design philosophy that still characterizes the brand today.
The product subsequently expanded internationally and received industry recognition, including the Best New Female Product award at the 2015 ETO Awards.
Technology
The central innovation associated with Womanizer is Pleasure Air™ Technology.
Unlike a conventional vibrator, which produces mechanical vibration through direct contact, Pleasure Air is designed to stimulate the clitoris without the stimulation head directly rubbing against it. The device creates pulses of air pressure around the clitoris.
The basic concept is:
air pressure → rhythmic pulses → indirect clitoral stimulation
Womanizer developed this approach as an alternative for people who find direct vibration too intense or who experience reduced sensitivity after prolonged stimulation. The company’s explanation specifically emphasizes avoiding direct contact and potential overstimulation. 2
This technology became sufficiently associated with the brand that Womanizer is frequently described as the company that pioneered the modern air-pulse/air-pleasure category. Its 2026 press material calls it the original inventor of Pleasure Air.
It is worth distinguishing brand claims from independently established medical facts, however. Marketing statements about orgasm rates, nerve stimulation and individual experiences should not automatically be interpreted as clinical conclusions.
Product development
Womanizer initially concentrated heavily on its signature clitoral-stimulation technology, but the product portfolio subsequently expanded.
Examples of the brand’s product-development directions include:
- Air-based clitoral stimulators — the core Womanizer category.
- Travel-oriented products — smaller devices designed for portability and discretion.
- Dual-stimulation products — combining Pleasure Air stimulation with another form of stimulation.
- Smart features — including technologies marketed under names such as Autopilot and Smart Silence.
- Connected/smart products — integrating electronics and app-oriented functionality in some product generations.
The company describes its philosophy as combining product design with research, technology and sexual-wellness education rather than treating its products simply as conventional adult novelties.
Corporate history
An important part of Womanizer’s history is its relationship with WOW Tech.
In 2018, Womanizer and Canadian company Standard Innovation, the maker of We-Vibe, came together to create the WOW Tech Group. The resulting group brought two major sexual-wellness brands—Womanizer and We-Vibe—under the same corporate umbrella.
The next major change came in 2021, when WOW Tech and Lovehoney merged to create Lovehoney Group. Womanizer consequently became part of the larger Lovehoney Group portfolio.
Today, Womanizer sits alongside brands such as We-Vibe, Arcwave, ROMP, Fifty Shades of Grey and Happy Rabbit within the Lovehoney Group portfolio.
As of 2026, Womanizer is a brand within Lovehoney Group, following the 2021 combination of Lovehoney and WOW Tech. Lovehoney Group describes itself as a global sexual-wellbeing company whose portfolio includes Womanizer and several other major intimate-product brands. 4
Brand philosophy
Womanizer’s branding is built around the idea that sexual pleasure is part of self-care and wellbeing.
Its official messaging uses concepts such as:
- self-love
- body confidence
- sexual empowerment
- openness about masturbation
- removing shame around sexuality
- female sexual pleasure
- sexual-health education
The brand has used campaigns such as #IMasturbate to encourage more open discussion of masturbation and sexuality.
This is significant from a branding perspective because Womanizer helped move its category away from being marketed exclusively as an “adult novelty” product and toward the language of sexual wellness.
Research and sexual-health initiatives
Womanizer has also attempted to associate itself with research and sexual-health initiatives.
One example is the Menstrubation Study, conducted in collaboration with Lunette, which investigated whether masturbation could help alleviate menstrual pain. The brand has also established its Pleasure Fund, which it describes as supporting research into female sexual health and pleasure.
The company’s current messaging frames these initiatives within a broader effort to address what it calls the gender health gap and promote greater understanding of sexual wellbeing. 3
Market position
Womanizer generally occupies the premium end of the sexual-wellness market.
Its major competitive distinction is not simply the physical design of its products but its ownership and development of the Pleasure Air concept. The technology became sufficiently influential that competing manufacturers subsequently introduced their own air-pulse products.
One notable competitor is Satisfyer, another German sexual-wellness brand that later became strongly associated with air-pulse stimulation. Womanizer’s first product appeared in 2014, while Satisfyer’s major Pro 2 product arrived later, in 2016.
Consequently, Womanizer is often positioned as the original premium brand in the modern air-pulse category, while competitors have helped make the underlying concept more widespread and accessible.
Global growth
The brand has grown substantially beyond its German origins.
Older Womanizer corporate materials described availability in more than 60 countries, while a 2024 company announcement said more than 10 million people in over 90 countries had purchased Womanizer products.
Its 2026 press material reports more than 10 million products sold worldwide and says that Womanizer generated more than 12.6 billion media impressions in 2025 across more than 3,000 articles.
Those figures are company-reported rather than independently audited figures, so they are best understood as the brand’s own reported milestones.
Brand recognition
Womanizer has developed a reputation beyond the specialist sex-toy market. Its products have appeared in mainstream lifestyle, women’s-health, relationship and pop-culture media.
The brand’s visibility has also been helped by celebrity and entertainment exposure. For example, the Womanizer Premium 2 appeared in Katy Perry’s 2024 Woman’s World music video, bringing the product into mainstream pop culture. 1
Recent company press materials also cite recognition from publications including Women’s Health, Bustle, AskMen and The Strategist.
Sustainability
In addition to sexual wellness, Womanizer has increasingly incorporated sustainability into its brand positioning.
Its communications discuss environmentally conscious materials, product design and initiatives intended to reduce environmental impact. The brand has promoted these efforts under concepts such as “greener orgasms.”
As with its technology claims, individual environmental claims can vary by product, so it is more accurate to view sustainability as an increasing component of the brand strategy rather than assuming every Womanizer product has identical environmental characteristics.
Significance
From a business and product-history perspective, Womanizer’s significance is larger than simply being a successful sex-toy manufacturer.
It helped establish several shifts in the sexual-wellness industry:
- Technology-led sexual wellness — positioning an intimate product around a recognizable proprietary technology.
- Contact-free stimulation — popularizing air-pressure stimulation as an alternative to conventional vibration.
- Premiumization — treating intimate products as sophisticated consumer electronics and lifestyle products.
- Mainstream branding — using modern packaging, advertising, editorial PR and influencer/celebrity exposure.
- Sexual-wellness positioning — framing masturbation and pleasure as aspects of wellbeing and self-care.
- Research-oriented branding — connecting commercial products with conversations around female sexual health.
