History
Origins (1946–1957)
Yonex traces its roots to 1946, when Minoru Yoneyama established Yoneyama Company in Nagaoka, Niigata, Japan. Initially, the company manufactured wooden fishing floats.1
As plastic fishing floats replaced wooden ones in the 1950s, the business faced collapse. Rather than give up, Yoneyama made a promise that would shape the company’s future:
Never be left behind by technology again.
This philosophy became the foundation of Yonex’s culture of continuous innovation.1
Entering Badminton
Leveraging its woodworking expertise, the company began producing wooden badminton racquets in 1957.
By the early 1960s, Yonex started selling racquets under its own brand after its OEM customer went bankrupt. Despite factory fires and financial challenges, the company rebuilt quickly and expanded internationally.1
Expansion into Tennis
In 1969, Yonex entered the tennis market with the T-7000 aluminum tennis racquet.
Throughout the 1970s, the company pioneered:
- Aluminum racquets
- Carbon-graphite technology
- Lightweight racquet construction
- Oval Pressed Shaft (OPS) technology
These innovations helped Yonex gain recognition beyond badminton.1
Becoming “Yonex”
Originally called Yoneyama, the company shortened its name to Yonex during the 1970s as it expanded globally.
The letter “X” was chosen to symbolise unlimited possibilities and the future, making the brand easier to pronounce internationally.1
Major Growth (1980s–Present)
During the 1980s and beyond, Yonex expanded into:
- Tennis
- Golf
- Snowboards
- Sports apparel
- Shoes
- Tennis balls
- Bicycles
- Carbon composite technologies
The company also became a major sponsor of international sporting events and developed subsidiaries across North America, Europe, Asia, and other regions.2
