History
Downy was developed during the late 1950s by Procter & Gamble to address a common issue associated with early synthetic laundry detergents. Although these detergents cleaned clothing effectively, they often left fabrics feeling stiff, rough, and prone to static electricity after drying.
To resolve this, P&G scientists formulated a liquid fabric softener designed to coat fabric fibres during the rinse cycle. This innovation helped clothes feel softer while reducing wrinkles and static cling. The brand was officially launched in 1960, quickly becoming one of the first successful liquid fabric softeners in the United States.
Over subsequent decades, Downy expanded its range beyond traditional softeners:
- 1960: Downy fabric softener introduced.
- 1983: P&G introduced concentrated Downy formulas, reducing packaging and water usage.
- 1987: Downy Dryer Sheets launched to reduce static and soften clothes in dryers.
- 2011: Downy Unstopables In-Wash Scent Boosters introduced.
- 2012: Downy Infusions launched with premium fragrances.
- 2015 onward: Downy expanded its positioning from simple softening to broader fabric protection against stretching, fading, and fuzz. 3

- Help reduce fabric wear, stretching, fading, and fuzz over repeated washes 4
