History
Origins (1991–1995)
The Fuguiniao brand originated in 1991, when members of the Lin family in Shishi, Fujian Province, began producing men’s leather shoes under the Fuguiniao name.
In 1995, Fuguiniao Shoes Development Co., Ltd. was established to expand manufacturing and nationwide sales. The company focused on genuine leather footwear aimed at China’s growing middle-class business market.
Rapid Growth (Late 1990s–2012)
Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Fuguiniao became one of China’s best-known domestic leather shoe brands.
Major milestones included:
- Expansion from men’s shoes into women’s footwear (1997)
- Nationwide retail distribution
- Development of business casual footwear
- Launch of leather accessories
- Expansion into business casual menswear
By 2012, according to the company’s IPO prospectus:
- It was China’s third-largest branded business casual footwear manufacturer by retail revenue.
- It ranked sixth among branded men’s and women’s footwear manufacturers in China.
Public Listing
Fuguiniao was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 20 December 2013 under stock code 1819. The IPO attracted significant investor attention because the company was viewed as one of China’s strongest domestic leather footwear brands 1.

Manufacturing
Fuguiniao operated large manufacturing facilities in Shishi, Fujian Province, one of China’s major footwear manufacturing centres. Its business covered product design, research and development, manufacturing, branding, wholesale distribution, and retail sales. The company also produced footwear for overseas clients through OEM/ODM manufacturing.
Brand Positioning
Fuguiniao positioned itself as a mid- to upper-mid-market Chinese business footwear brand. Its core customers included office workers, business professionals, government employees, and middle-aged consumers. The brand emphasised genuine leather, business elegance, comfort, durability, and traditional craftsmanship.
Awards and Recognition
Between the late 1990s and early 2010s, Fuguiniao received numerous national honours, including:
- China Well-known Trademark (中国驰名商标) (1999)
- China Top Brand Product (中国名牌产品) (2002 and 2005)
- Multiple China Leather Shoes King (中国真皮鞋王) awards from the China Leather Industry Association
- Recognition by China’s Ministry of Commerce as one of the country’s most competitive brands
Financial Decline
Despite its success, Fuguiniao struggled after 2013. Contributing factors included declining demand for traditional leather dress shoes, the growth of sportswear and sneaker brands, heavy debt, investments outside its core business, slowing retail performance, and challenges adapting to e-commerce. Trading of the company’s shares was suspended in 2016, and its financial condition continued to deteriorate.
Bankruptcy and Delisting
Key events in the company’s dissolution included:
- 2016: Trading suspended on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
- 2019: The company’s restructuring plan failed.
- 2019: A Chinese court declared the company bankrupt.
- August 2019: The company was delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange 2.
Brand After Bankruptcy
Although the original listed company ceased operations, the Fuguiniao trademark has continued to appear in the Chinese market through reorganised entities and licensing arrangements. Products bearing the Fuguiniao name—including footwear, apparel, and accessories—remain available through various retail and e-commerce channels in China, but these businesses are distinct from the former Hong Kong-listed company 3.
Product Style
Typical Fuguiniao products feature genuine leather uppers, conservative business styling, black and brown colourways, cushioned insoles, rubber or leather outsoles, and formal or business-casual designs. The brand has also introduced more casual sneakers and lifestyle footwear in recent years under its revived branding 3.
Legacy
At its peak, Fuguiniao was regarded as one of China’s most prominent domestic leather shoe brands and helped popularise business-casual leather footwear among Chinese professionals. Its later decline is frequently cited as an example of how traditional footwear manufacturers faced increasing competition from sportswear brands, changing consumer preferences, and the rapid growth of online retail.
