History
Foundation (2013)
Huawei established HONOR in 2013 as an internet-first smartphone brand designed to compete with rapidly growing online competitors by offering feature-rich devices at accessible price points, specifically targeting younger demographics. Unlike Huawei’s premium market positioning, HONOR emphasised competitive pricing, online sales channels, contemporary design, high-performance hardware and youth-oriented marketing. Its initial smartphone models achieved significant popularity within China before the brand began its international expansion.2
Global Expansion (2014–2019)
Between 2014 and 2019, HONOR expanded into European, Indian, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and Latin American markets. Notable devices from this period included the HONOR 6, HONOR 8, HONOR 9, HONOR View Series and HONOR Play. The brand developed a reputation for delivering flagship-level specifications at mid-range prices, characterised by dual-camera innovations, large-capacity batteries, fast charging capabilities, premium metal and glass construction, and strong gaming performance. By 2019, HONOR had emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone brands.3
Separation from Huawei
In 2019, United States trade restrictions imposed on Huawei also affected HONOR, preventing newer devices from accessing Google Mobile Services. To preserve the brand’s global competitiveness, Huawei sold HONOR in November 2020 to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., Ltd. This divestment enabled HONOR to operate independently and re-establish partnerships with key suppliers.4
Return to Global Markets
Following its separation from Huawei, HONOR restored access to major technology partners including Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, MediaTek, Microsoft, Sony and Samsung. Crucially, the company regained the ability to offer Google services on its global Android devices, allowing it to resume international smartphone launches with full Google support outside China.5
