About Marie’s
Marie’s is an American brand of refrigerated salad dressings, dips, spreads and glazes that traces its origins to Seattle, Washington. The brand was established in 1959, when a blue cheese dressing created at a small Seattle café proved popular enough to be bottled for retail sale. Today, Marie’s is best known for creamy, premium-style refrigerated salad dressings, particularly its Chunky Blue Cheese, although its portfolio has expanded to include ranch, Caesar, vinaigrettes, dips, spreads, glazes and smaller-format products.1
As of 2026, the brand is owned by West Madison Foods, a company established by private-equity firm Brynwood Partners following the acquisition of Marie’s from Ventura Foods in 2023.3

History
Origins in Seattle
The history of Marie’s dates to 1959 at a small Seattle café owned by Marie Nordquist. According to the brand’s official history, chef Harold Smith developed a new blue cheese dressing and asked Marie to taste it. After she approved the recipe, customers quickly developed a strong demand for salads topped with the creamy dressing.1
The dressing became sufficiently popular that the café began bottling it for local retail sale. This transition from restaurant to retail is central to the identity of Marie’s, as the flagship product originated as a foodservice-style recipe rather than a condiment designed specifically for supermarkets.4
Trademark records provide further evidence of the brand’s early commercial history. The Marie’s name was filed as a trademark in December 1959 for cheese-flavoured salad dressing, while another registration records first use in commerce in November 1959.5
Expansion beyond blue cheese
Although blue cheese established the reputation of Marie’s, the company gradually expanded into other refrigerated dressings. Historical trademark records associate the Marie’s name with products including Thousand Island, French, Italian and other dressings, as well as mayonnaise and various sauces.7
Over time, Marie’s became one of the recognisable brands in the American refrigerated salad-dressing segment. Unlike shelf-stable bottled dressings, Marie’s products are traditionally sold in the refrigerated produce section. The company attributes this approach to its emphasis on real, premium ingredients and its heritage as a fresh-style dressing brand.6
By the late 20th century, Marie’s was established as one of the major competitors in refrigerated dressings alongside brands such as Litehouse and Marzetti.20
Ventura Foods era
For a period, Marie’s was part of Ventura Foods, a large American food manufacturer. Under Ventura, Marie’s continued to operate as a premium refrigerated-dressing brand and expanded its portfolio.
Ownership under Ventura ended in 2023, when Brynwood Partners announced that its newly formed portfolio company, West Madison Foods, would acquire the Marie’s brand and the Dean’s Dip business. The transaction also included the Thornton, Illinois manufacturing facility, which continued supporting the business.3
West Madison Foods
The acquisition was completed in 2023, making West Madison Foods the current owner of Marie’s. Headquartered in Chicago, West Madison Foods operates Marie’s alongside its other refrigerated food brands.8
The brand subsequently expanded beyond traditional salad dressing. In 2024, West Madison Foods announced a new line of refrigerated fresh-produce dips, extending Marie’s into the broader snacking and dipping category.9
Products
Marie’s describes its current portfolio as consisting of more than 25 flavours across several product categories.14

The company’s product catalogue categorises these into Creamy, Vinaigrette and Plant-Based lines.10
Dips
Marie’s has expanded into refrigerated dips, including products such as:
- Creamy Ranch Dip
- Everything Bagel Dip
This expansion represents a strategic move beyond salads towards snacking, entertaining and dipping. West Madison Foods formally announced the launch of Marie’s fresh-produce dips in 2024.22
Spreads
Marie’s also sells refrigerated spreads, including:
- Creamy Blue Cheese
- Classic Caesar
- Creamy Homestyle Ranch
These products allow the brand to compete not only as a salad dressing but also as a sandwich, burger and general food spread.11
Marie’s Minis
Marie’s Minis are smaller-format versions designed for convenient use. The brand currently promotes products such as Marie’s Minis Creamy Ranch Dressing & Dip, sold in multipacks.18
The Minis concept supports the brand’s effort to make its traditionally refrigerated dressings more convenient for lunches, snacks and individual portions.
Glazes
The portfolio also includes glazes, such as Strawberry Glaze, extending Marie’s into different culinary applications.24
Signature product: Chunky Blue Cheese
If one product can be regarded as definitive for Marie’s, it is Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing. The brand itself describes Chunky Blue Cheese as its “claim to fame.”16
Its importance stems directly from the origin story of Marie’s: the company’s original commercially successful product was a creamy blue cheese dressing developed at Marie Nordquist’s Seattle café. The modern product continues to emphasise a rich, creamy profile and blue cheese character. Marie’s also sells Super Blue Cheese and Lite Chunky Blue Cheese, providing multiple variations around its historic speciality.17
Ingredients and product philosophy
A significant aspect of the positioning of Marie’s is the use of what the company calls “real, premium ingredients.” The brand emphasises rich and creamy flavours rather than positioning itself primarily as a low-calorie or minimalist dressing company.2
For example, the current Thousand Island formulation includes ingredients such as sour cream, sweet relish, tomato paste, egg yolks, vinegar, peppers and mustard seed.12 Its Creamy French Dressing similarly uses ingredients including cultured buttermilk, sour cream, egg yolks, vinegar, mustard and spices.13
This ingredient profile explains the characteristic positioning of the brand as a “rich and indulgent refrigerated dressing” rather than a “light health-food dressing.” The refrigerated format is also central to its identity; Marie’s states that its dressings and dips are found in the refrigerated produce section, rather than the ordinary shelf-stable condiment aisle.4
Brand identity
Marie’s possesses several distinctive elements in its brand identity.
Premium and indulgent
The brand deliberately embraces an indulgent character. Its current positioning describes Marie’s as “unapologetically indulgent”, connecting its modern identity to the richness of its original blue cheese dressing.14
Restaurant heritage
Unlike many supermarket food brands, the origin story of Marie’s is based around a real restaurant/café and chef-created recipe. This provides the brand with a culinary rather than purely industrial heritage.
Refrigerated positioning
Refrigeration serves as another important differentiator. Marie’s products occupy the refrigerated section, reinforcing an image of freshness and premium quality.4
Nostalgia
The company emphasises that its products have been “loved from one generation to the next,” linking the 1959 origin story with contemporary consumers.19
Ownership
Marie’s has passed through several corporate ownership structures during its history.
- 1959: Marie’s originates at Marie Nordquist’s Seattle café.
- Later decades: The brand develops into a major packaged refrigerated-dressing business.
- Ventura Foods era: Marie’s becomes part of the portfolio of Ventura Foods.
- 2023: Brynwood Partners establishes West Madison Foods to acquire Marie’s and Dean’s Dip from Ventura Foods.3
- 2023–present: West Madison Foods operates Marie’s as one of its core refrigerated-food brands. The current Marie’s website identifies West Madison Foods as the registered trademark owner.15
In simplified form, the ownership lineage is: Marie’s Café → packaged Marie’s brand → Ventura Foods → West Madison Foods / Brynwood Partners.
Manufacturing and distribution
The 2023 acquisition included Marie’s manufacturing operations at a facility in Thornton, Illinois. West Madison Foods stated that the facility and its approximately 84 full-time employees would continue supporting the business after the acquisition.29
Marie’s products are principally positioned for the U.S. retail market, where consumers encounter them in refrigerated sections of grocery stores. The company’s official website provides a product locator for finding retailers.4
Market position
Marie’s occupies a distinctive niche within the U.S. salad-dressing market. Rather than competing primarily on low price or health-oriented formulations, the brand has historically differentiated itself through:
- Refrigerated distribution
- Creamy textures
- Premium ingredients
- Strong flavour
- Restaurant-inspired heritage
- Blue cheese expertise
- A broad range of indulgent dressings and dips
Its major recognisable products include Blue Cheese, Caesar, Ranch and Coleslaw, which West Madison Foods identified as leading products when announcing the 2023 acquisition.23 Its competitive environment includes other refrigerated dressing brands, particularly Litehouse and Marzetti, although each brand maintains its own positioning and history.20

In popular understanding
Marie’s can essentially be summarised as a Seattle-born American premium refrigerated-dressing brand whose identity was built around blue cheese. Its most significant historical achievement was taking a restaurant-style dressing and turning it into a packaged refrigerated supermarket product. More than six decades later, the original blue cheese heritage remains central to the brand, but Marie’s has evolved into a broader refrigerated-food business encompassing salad dressings, dips, spreads, Minis and glazes.28
One-sentence definition
