New Era Cap, commonly referred to as New Era, is an American headwear and lifestyle brand best known for its baseball caps, particularly the 59FIFTY fitted cap. Founded in 1920 in Buffalo, New York, the company evolved from a maker of fashionable men’s hats into one of the world’s most recognisable sports-headwear brands. History
1920: Foundation
New Era’s story begins in Buffalo, New York, in 1920. Ehrhardt Koch, a 37-year-old German immigrant and skilled hat maker, believed that traditional hat manufacturing could be improved through better craftsmanship and production techniques.
With financial help from his sister Rose, Koch established the business that would become New Era Cap. The company initially concentrated on fashionable headwear rather than sports caps. During its first year, it reportedly produced approximately 60,000 Gatsby-style caps.3
The company therefore did not begin as a baseball-cap company. Its transformation into one came later.
1930s: Entering baseball
Koch’s son Harold Koch joined the business in 1932. He recognised two important changes in the market: demand for traditional fashion caps was declining, while professional baseball was becoming increasingly popular.
New Era responded by developing baseball caps. In 1934, it produced its first professional baseball cap for the Cleveland Indians (now the Cleveland Guardians). This marked the beginning of New Era’s long relationship with professional baseball.4
This decision became one of the most important turning points in the company’s history.
1940s: Survival during World War II
During World War II, manufacturing was complicated by shortages of fabric and other materials. The Koch family adapted by obtaining surplus plain fabrics from New York’s garment district.
According to New Era’s own historical account, the family even dyed some of the fabric at home in a washing machine so that it could match the colours of local baseball teams.5
The company’s ability to continue producing caps during this period helped establish its reputation for adaptability.
The 59FIFTY
Birth of an icon
The most important product in New Era’s history is arguably the 59FIFTY.
In 1954, Harold Koch redesigned the fitted baseball cap, creating the silhouette that became known as the 59FIFTY. It was designed as a structured, high-quality fitted cap and was initially associated primarily with professional baseball.6
The basic design has remained remarkably consistent for decades, although its materials, manufacturing techniques and performance features have evolved. New Era describes the modern 59FIFTY as retaining much of the design and construction principles established in the 1950s.7
Why the 59FIFTY matters
The 59FIFTY eventually became more than sports equipment. It became a form of identity and self-expression.
A fitted cap could communicate:
- Which baseball team someone supported
- Where someone came from
- Their connection to a particular city
- Their involvement in hip-hop or street culture
- Their fashion preferences
- Their personal style
That transformation from sports uniform โ fan merchandise โ fashion object โ cultural symbol is central to New Era’s success.
In 2024, New Era celebrated the 70th anniversary of the 59FIFTY.8
Relationship with Major League Baseball
New Era’s relationship with Major League Baseball (MLB) is perhaps the most important partnership in the company’s development.
By 1950, New Era was reportedly the only independent cap maker supplying caps to major-league baseball teams, including the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers.9
The relationship continued to expand over subsequent decades.
In 1993, New Era became the exclusive supplier of on-field caps for MLB. This helped transform the 59FIFTY from an ordinary baseball cap into an authentic representation of professional baseball.10
The importance of this arrangement was significant: fans could buy essentially the same style of fitted cap worn by professional players.
That concept of “authenticity” became one of New Era’s major competitive advantages.
New Era and streetwear
New Era’s transformation into a lifestyle brand accelerated during the 1990s.
One particularly important moment occurred in 1996, when filmmaker and cultural figure Spike Lee requested a red New York Yankees cap to match his outfit for the World Series. The Yankees traditionally wore navy-coloured caps, so the request was unconventional.
New Era, MLB and the Yankees ultimately approved the special cap.
The event helped demonstrate that a team cap could function independently from the traditional boundaries of sports uniforms. New Era credits the episode with helping push the 59FIFTY toward streetwear and lifestyle culture.8
This period was crucial because New Era’s caps began appearing not merely on baseball players and fans, but on:
- Hip-hop artists
- Musicians
- Actors
- Filmmakers
- Skateboarders
- Streetwear enthusiasts
- Fashion personalities
The cap became part of everyday clothing rather than something worn only at sporting events.
The New Era Flag
One of New Era’s most recognisable visual elements is the small flag logo embroidered on the wearer’s left side of the cap.
The flag became an important part of New Era’s modern brand identity and eventually appeared on professional on-field caps as well. New Era’s history identifies 1997 as an important point in the development of the Flag logo, while the company notes that the flag appeared on an MLB on-field cap in 2016.11
Unlike a large front-facing team logo, the New Era flag is deliberately subtle. This helped make the brand recognisable even when a cap carried a different organisation’s logo on the front.
For example, a Yankees cap may have the NY logo on the front while the New Era flag appears on the side.
Expansion into other sports
Although baseball remains fundamental to New Era’s identity, the company expanded into other major American sports.
NFL
In 2012, New Era became the official sideline cap of the National Football League (NFL).12
NBA
In 2016, New Era became the official on-court cap supplier of the National Basketball Association (NBA).12
New Era described this period as historically significant because it gave the company exclusive headwear rights across MLB, NFL and NBA at the same time.12
This broadened New Era’s audience considerably. Someone who did not follow baseball could still encounter the brand through football or basketball.
Product range
Although New Era is synonymous with caps, the company is no longer exclusively a hat manufacturer.
Its contemporary product range includes:
Headwear
- 59FIFTY โ structured fitted cap
- 9FIFTY โ adjustable snapback
- 9FORTY โ adjustable, typically curved-brim cap
- 39THIRTY โ stretch-fit cap
- Bucket hats
- Trucker caps
- Beanies
- Other seasonal headwear
The 59FIFTY remains the flagship silhouette.
Apparel
New Era also produces clothing such as:
- T-shirts
- Hoodies
- Jackets
- Sweatshirts
- Jerseys
- Shorts
- Pants
Accessories
Depending on the market, the brand also sells:
- Bags
- Cap storage products
- Cap-care products
- Small accessories
- Other lifestyle merchandise
New Era’s Singapore operation, for example, lists fitted, snapback, stretch and adjustable caps as well as cap accessories, storage and care products.13
New Era’s design philosophy
New Era’s identity is built around the combination of sport authenticity and cultural relevance.
The brand’s core design characteristics include:
Structured silhouettes
The 59FIFTY has a firm crown and flat visor, giving it its distinctive appearance.
Team identity
Professional team logos remain one of New Era’s most recognisable design elements.
Fitted sizing
Unlike a typical adjustable baseball cap, the 59FIFTY is produced in specific fitted sizes.
Branding
The small New Era flag provides a consistent brand signature.
Limited editions and collaborations
New Era frequently works with sports teams, artists, entertainment properties, fashion brands and other cultural institutions.
This combination allows the same basic cap to exist simultaneously as sports merchandise and fashion.
Collaborations
Collaboration has become a major part of New Era’s modern identity.
The company has worked with organisations and personalities across:
- Professional sports
- Music
- Entertainment
- Fashion
- Streetwear
- Pop culture
- Film and television
- Anime and gaming
These collaborations allow New Era to use its established cap silhouettes as a canvas for different cultural identities.
A particularly famous example is the relationship between New Era, Spike Lee, MLB and the New York Yankees that developed in the 1990s.8
In 2026, for example, New Era partnered with Timberland and MLB teams on a limited-edition collection combining New Era caps with Timberland boots, illustrating the brand’s continuing movement between sports and lifestyle fashion.10
Globalisation
New Era began as a Buffalo-based American manufacturer, but its identity eventually became global.
During the 2000s, the company expanded internationally, opening operations in markets including Europe, Japan and Australia.14
Today, New Era says its products are sold in more than 80 countries and that it maintains more than 500 licences across sports, fashion, music and entertainment.15
This is important because New Era is no longer simply an American baseball-cap company. It has become a global lifestyle brand whose products can represent different sports teams, cities, countries, entertainment franchises and cultural communities.
New Era in Singapore
New Era maintains an official presence in Singapore through New Era Cap Singapore.
The Singapore operation offers a wide selection of the brand’s core silhouettes, including the 59FIFTY, 9FIFTY and 9FORTY, alongside seasonal apparel and accessories tailored to the local market.13 As in many Asian markets, baseball caps in Singapore are widely incorporated into casual and streetwear outfits, often independent of any direct affiliation with American sports leagues. This cultural adoption has helped sustain New Era’s relevance in the region beyond its athletic heritage.
Corporate identity
New Era remains closely associated with the Koch family, which has been involved with the company across multiple generations. Chris Koch, Ehrhardt Koch’s great-grandson, became president in 1993 and CEO in 2001. The company subsequently moved its corporate headquarters back to downtown Buffalo in 2006.16
The family-business aspect is an important part of New Era’s story: a company founded by a craftsman in 1920 developed into an international brand without abandoning its Buffalo origins.
Cultural significance
New Era’s importance goes beyond manufacturing hats.
The company played a role in changing how people perceive the baseball cap.
Originally, a cap was largely functional:
It was part of a baseball uniform.
New Era helped turn it into:
A representation of team identity.
And eventually:
A piece of fashion and personal identity.
This evolution explains why New Era occupies an unusual position between sportswear and streetwear.
A New Era Yankees cap, for example, can simultaneously represent:
- The New York Yankees
- New York City
- Baseball
- American sports culture
- Hip-hop culture
- Streetwear
- Fashion
- The wearer’s personal identity
That multi-layered meaning is one reason the brand has remained culturally relevant for more than a century.
Brand positioning
New Era can broadly be understood as occupying four overlapping markets:
1. Sports
This is the foundation of the company. Official league and team relationships give New Era strong credibility and authenticity.
2. Streetwear
The 59FIFTY became particularly influential in hip-hop and streetwear, helping establish the baseball cap as a fashion item.
3. Lifestyle
New Era caps are worn casually regardless of whether the wearer attends games or follows the corresponding team.
4. Pop culture
Collaborations allow New Era to connect with movies, music, artists, entertainment franchises and other cultural communities.
What makes New Era different?
The simplest way to understand New Era’s competitive advantage is authenticity.
Many brands can manufacture a baseball cap. New Era’s advantage comes from the fact that its history is deeply embedded in professional sports.
The company has been making professional baseball caps since 1934, developed the 59FIFTY in 1954, became an MLB on-field supplier, expanded into NFL and NBA headwear, and then successfully transferred that sports credibility into streetwear and fashion.17
In other words, New Era did not simply put sports logos on fashion hats. Its fashion credibility developed partly because its hats were already authentic sports products.

In popular culture
New Era’s strongest cultural achievement is arguably that it made the cap itself recognisable as a branded fashion object.
Before this transformation, the team logo was usually the main thing people noticed. With New Era, the silhouette, fit, construction and authenticity of the cap became important in their own right.
The 59FIFTY became particularly associated with American urban culture and hip-hop. Its structured crown, flat brim and fitted sizing made it visually distinct from ordinary adjustable baseball caps.
Consequently, owning a particular New Era could communicate something about where you are from, what team you support, what music or culture you identify with, or simply what style you prefer.
Legacy
More than 100 years after its founding, New Era’s legacy can be summarised in three major achievements:
1. It helped professionalise the baseball cap.
New Era transformed the cap from a relatively simple piece of sportswear into a carefully constructed, standardised product.
2. It created one of the world’s most recognisable cap silhouettes.
The 59FIFTY has remained central to the brand since 1954.18
3. It connected sports with fashion and street culture.
New Era demonstrated that an authentic sports product could become a global fashion symbol.
