History
Origins: 1983
Paldo was established in 1983 as the ramen and snack business division of Korea Yakult (now hy). In August 1983, the company selected “Paldo” (νλ) as the unified brand name for its ramen business, commencing sales of Paldo Ramen the following month.3 The name Paldo literally translates to “eight provinces,” referencing the traditional geographic divisions of Korea and evoking a national identity associated with diverse regional food traditions.4

Independence from Korea Yakult
A pivotal moment in the company’s history occurred in 2012. After operating under Korea Yakult for nearly three decades, the Paldo business was spun off in January 2012 to form Paldo Co., Ltd. as an independent entity. This separation allowed Paldo to establish its own corporate identity as a comprehensive food company rather than functioning solely as a ramen division.5 Since becoming independent, the company has expanded its portfolio beyond traditional ramen to include beverages, ready-to-eat foods, snacks, international business operations, and logistics.6
Major Products
Paldo Bibimmen
Bibimmen (νλ λΉλΉλ©΄) is widely considered Paldo’s signature product. Introduced in 1984, it differs from conventional instant ramen by being served without broth; the noodles are cooked, rinsed, and mixed with a sweet, spicy, and tangy sauce.7 Paldo describes Bibimmen as Korea’s number one bibim-style instant noodle and identifies it as a flagship product for international markets.8 Its introduction helped establish the non-soup bibim noodle category within the Korean instant noodle market.9
Dosirac
Launched in 1986, Dosirac (λμλ½) holds significant historical importance for the company. The name derives from the Korean word dosirak, meaning a packed meal or lunchbox. Dosirac achieved particular success in Russia, where Paldo established a subsidiary in 1992. The company currently designates Dosirac as its global flagship and a leading brand in the Russian instant noodle market, demonstrating the viability of Korean instant noodles outside domestic borders.
Jumbo Noodle
Introduced in 1990, Jumbo Noodle is characterised by its large bowl format. Paldo describes it as Korea’s leading big-bowl noodle product, and it remains one of the company’s primary offerings for international export.10
King Noodle
Paldo produces King Noodle, a large cup-style instant noodle available in various flavours, including spicy chicken and mild chicken variants. It forms part of the company’s current international product portfolio.11
Other Instant Noodles
Beyond its core range, Paldo has diversified its noodle offerings significantly since the 2000s. Notable products include:
- Kokomen
- Teumsae Ramen
- Kkokomen
- Namja Ramen
- Paldo Jjajangmen
- Paldo Buljjjamppong
- King Ttukbaegi / King Ttukkeong-type products
- Various cup noodles and regional/international products
Historical records indicate that products such as Teumsae Ramen, Kkokomen, Namja Ramen, Jjajangmen, and Buljjampong were introduced during the company’s expansion phases in the 2000s and 2010s.
Beverages
While primarily recognised overseas for noodles, beverages constitute a significant portion of Paldo’s business.
Rice Punch / Sikhye
Rice Punch (Sikhye) is a traditional Korean sweet rice beverage. Paldo launched its commercial version in 1993, and it has since become one of the company’s most prominent non-noodle products.12
Pororo Drink
Paldo manufactures Pororo Drink, a children’s beverage licensed from the popular Korean animated character Pororo. Marketed as Korea’s leading kids’ beverage, it is available in multiple flavours including milk, strawberry, apple, blueberry, mango, peach, green grape, and tropical fruit.
Aloe Drinks
The company also retails Aloe Drinks, which include aloe vera pieces within the beverage.13
International Expansion
Internationalisation has been central to Paldo’s growth strategy. The company began exporting in 1984, with records showing shipments to Japan starting in 1986 and to Russia in 1992.14 Russia emerged as a key market due to the success of Dosirac, after which Paldo expanded into North America, Southeast Asia, and other regions.
Current corporate information states that Paldo products are exported to more than 80 countries, with specific emphasis on the United States, Russia, and Southeast Asia as priority markets.15 Export revenue has grown steadily over the last decade:
| Year | Export milestone |
|---|---|
| 2011 | US$30 million |
| 2015 | US$50 million |
| 2020 | US$70 million |
| 2021 | US$100 million |
| 2024 | US$128 million |
Paldo maintains international organisations and operational bases in several countries. Its official website lists a presence in Makati City, Philippines, alongside offices or operations in the United States, Indonesia, and India.
Role in K-Food
Paldo contributes to the broader international proliferation of K-Food, particularly Korean instant noodles. However, its approach differs from some competitors by diversifying beyond classic spicy soup ramen. The company has built international recognition through:
- Spicy and tangy bibim noodles
- Large-format bowl noodles
- Packed-meal-style noodles
- Traditional Korean beverages
- Children’s beverages
- Snacks and ready-to-eat foods
Consequently, Paldo positions itself as a global Korean food company rather than exclusively a ramen manufacturer.
Business Areas
Paldo currently operates across five primary business segments:
Ramen and instant foods
This remains the core business, encompassing traditional instant noodles, cup noodles, and specialised flavour variants.
Beverages
Production includes traditional drinks like Sikhye, children’s beverages like Pororo, and aloe-based drinks.
Exports
International sales are a major revenue component, with distribution networks spanning Asia, North America, Europe, and other markets.
Imports
Paldo imports various food, snack, and health-related products for distribution within the Korean domestic market.
Logistics
The company operates a distribution and logistics network supporting product movement from manufacturing to consumers. Paldo states it operates six distribution centres within Korea.
Brand Identity
The name Paldo (νλ), meaning “eight provinces,” references Korea’s traditional geographic divisions and reflects the company’s philosophy of integrating diverse tastes and food traditions. Corporate identity materials emphasise quality, distinctive flavour, customer satisfaction, and innovation. The brand logo is described in English-language materials as representing high customer expectations and a pioneering spirit.11
The company’s stated mission focuses on building a healthier society, while its vision is to become a comprehensive global nutrition company that prioritises customers.
Comparison with Other Korean Ramen Companies
Paldo competes in the same sector as major Korean food manufacturers such as Nongshim, Samyang Foods, and Ottogi, but maintains a distinct product identity.
| Company | Particularly associated with |
|---|---|
| Paldo | Bibimmen, Dosirac, Jumbo Noodle, beverages |
| Nongshim | Shin Ramyun and other soup-based noodles |
| Samyang Foods | Buldak/Buldak spicy noodles |
| Ottogi | Jin Ramen, Jinjjambbong, curry and other foods |
Paldo’s primary differentiator is its long-standing expertise in brothless bibim-style instant noodles, exemplified by Bibimmen, alongside its established international Dosirac business.
