Origins in 1966
Tai Sun’s roots lie in the home kitchen of Han Yew Lang and her husband, Lim Jit Syong, in Singapore. The family initially produced salted and roasted nuts that were supplied in bulk to bars and restaurants. At the time, peanuts were commonly purchased loose, prepared and sold by eating establishments, giving the young business an opportunity to supply ready-prepared peanuts. 3
The founders subsequently expanded beyond peanuts into products such as ikan bilis, keropok and other fried snacks. The business was formally incorporated in 1966 and gradually established itself as a Singaporean snack manufacturer.
From manual production to automation
In its early years, much of the work was performed manually. Peanuts had to be peeled and processed by hand, and production was closely tied to the amount the family could make each day.
During the 1980s, Tai Sun began adopting automation, partly in response to Singapore’s manpower constraints. This allowed the company to increase production while maintaining its position in the snack market. 4
Expansion and diversification
For many years, Tai Sun nuts remained the company’s core identity. Eventually, however, the business expanded into new categories and created additional brands.
Among the most important developments was the launch of Nature’s Wonders in 2008, a premium line focused on nuts and dried fruits. The range was positioned toward consumers looking for premium and healthier snack choices.
Tai Sun subsequently expanded into chips through UCA cassava chips and Treatz potato chips, creating a broader portfolio rather than relying solely on traditional nuts.
Today, Tai Sun’s website presents four principal product families:
- Tai Sun — nuts, crackers and traditional snack products.
- Nature’s Wonders — premium nuts, dried fruits and nut mixes.
- UCA — cassava chips.
- Treatz — potato chips in flavours such as Original, Hot & Spicy, Seaweed and Summer Truffle.
The Tai Sun brand
The Tai Sun name is most strongly associated with everyday packaged nuts and snacks in Singapore. Its current product range includes items such as:
- Roasted Peanuts
- California Pistachios
- Roasted Cashew Nuts
- Cocktail Nuts
- Deluxe Mix
- Peanut Crackers
- Chilli Peanut Crackers
- Coated Green Peas
- Roasted Broad Beans
- Flavoured peanuts and nut mixes
This gives Tai Sun a somewhat distinctive position: it combines the familiarity of traditional Singaporean snack foods with the packaging, branding and distribution expected of a modern FMCG company.
Rebranding and modernization
One of the important chapters in Tai Sun’s more recent history was its effort to modernize the brand.
By the late 2000s and early 2010s, the company recognized that although consumers liked its products, the branding was not necessarily connecting with younger consumers. Esther Loo, a member of the third generation of the family, became involved in the company’s marketing and helped lead a major brand overhaul.
The company therefore worked on clearer brand architecture, packaging and product segmentation.
A branding project by DIA subsequently positioned Tai Sun around the idea of “Goodness in Everything”, accompanied by the consumer-facing tagline “Life’s a treat.” The redesigned packaging was intended to make the brand warmer, more contemporary and more visible on supermarket shelves.
Family ownership
Family ownership is one of the defining characteristics of Tai Sun.
The company has progressed through three generations of the founding family. The second and third generations became involved in different aspects of the business, allowing the company to retain its family-business character while professionalizing its manufacturing, marketing and distribution operations.
This generational continuity is central to Tai Sun’s corporate story: the company presents itself as combining heritage and traditional recipes with modern technology and product development.
International business
Although Tai Sun is strongly associated with Singapore, its business is not limited to the domestic market.
The Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association states that the company exports its products to more than 10 countries. Historical company information also records markets including Singapore, Malaysia, mainland China, India, the United Kingdom and Indonesia. 5
The company’s international ambitions go back decades. A 2016 report noted that the Middle East had become an important export market, with the company having entered the region roughly two decades earlier. 6
Manufacturing and quality
Tai Sun has evolved from a small, largely manual food operation into a modern packaged-food manufacturer.
The company says its production and quality systems are designed around international standards, including ISO 9001:2015 and HACCP. The Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association has also recorded the company as holding food-safety certifications including ISO 22000 and HACCP.
Its business has also included supplying snacks in bulk to hotels, restaurants, caterers and other institutional customers, in addition to consumer retail.
Corporate structure
The operating company behind the snack business is Tai Sun (Lim Kee) Food Industries Pte. Ltd., a Singapore private company incorporated in 1984. Its registered address is at 255 Pandan Loop, Singapore.
It is worth distinguishing this company from unrelated businesses that also use the name “Tai Sun.” For example, there is a separate Singapore entity called TAI SUN that was registered in 1974 and was involved in food-court and beverage activities; that entity is listed as terminated. It should not be confused with Tai Sun (Lim Kee) Food Industries.
Brand philosophy
Tai Sun’s current corporate positioning emphasizes three major themes:
Heritage. The company highlights its origins in a Singaporean family kitchen and more than three generations of family involvement.
Quality. Tai Sun emphasizes ingredient selection, manufacturing controls and food-safety standards.
Innovation. Alongside traditional roasted nuts and snacks, the company has developed premium products and newer snack categories to appeal to changing consumer preferences.
The company’s current slogan, “Good anywhere. Great everywhere.”, reflects its attempt to combine its Singaporean heritage with an international market presence.
Significance in Singapore
Tai Sun is an example of a Singaporean traditional food business that successfully transitioned into a modern FMCG brand.
Its history mirrors several broader developments in Singapore’s food industry: starting with a small family operation, moving from manual production toward automation, building supermarket distribution, developing recognizable consumer packaging, diversifying into multiple brands, and eventually exporting to overseas markets.
The brand’s longevity is particularly notable. From a home-kitchen operation in 1966, Tai Sun has developed into a multi-brand snack company with products sold both domestically and internationally.
