Foundation: 1878
Venchi’s story begins in 1878, when Silviano Venchi, then only about 20 years old, invested his savings in two bronze cauldrons and began experimenting with chocolate in Turin. He initially worked on a small scale before establishing a shop on Via degli Artisti, in Turin’s Vanchiglia area.
The location was significant because Piedmont was already becoming one of Europe’s important centers of chocolate production, particularly due to its exceptional hazelnuts. Venchi’s early success came from combining chocolate with local ingredients and experimenting with new textures and recipes.
The Early Signature: Nougatine
One of the company’s historic creations is Nougatine, made from chopped and caramelized hazelnuts covered in dark chocolate. This combination of dark chocolate + caramelized Piedmontese hazelnuts became representative of the company’s approach: relatively simple ingredients transformed through texture, roasting, caramelization, and chocolate craftsmanship.
Royal Recognition
As the business expanded, Venchi became associated with the prestige of Piedmontese confectionery and was described historically as an elegant chocolate shop and “Purveyor to the Royal Household.” While this historical royal association remains part of the brand’s heritage, Venchi no longer uses a royal coat of arms on its packaging.
Venchi and Piedmont
Piedmont is fundamental to understanding Venchi. The region is famous for:
- Hazelnuts from the Langhe
- Turin’s historic chocolate-making tradition
- Gianduja and Gianduiotto
- Italian confectionery craftsmanship
- A strong culture of premium food products
Consequently, Venchi does not present itself simply as an Italian chocolate manufacturer; its identity is strongly connected to the Piedmontese tradition of combining chocolate and hazelnuts. The company established a partnership with Piedmont hazelnut farmers in the Alta Langa area in 2020, aiming to create a shorter and more controlled supply chain for one of its most important ingredients.
Gianduiotto
One of the most important products associated with Venchi is the Gianduiotto. This is a distinctly Piedmontese style of chocolate made with chocolate and hazelnut paste, typically shaped like an upside-down boat or ingot-like triangular form. For Venchi, Gianduiotto represents the connection between Piedmont → hazelnuts → chocolate → Italian confectionery heritage. It gives the company a product with a strong regional identity, distinguishing it from generic premium chocolate brands.
Chocoviar
Chocoviar is one of Venchi’s best-known modern creations. It features a chocolate shell coated with small chocolate pieces or pearls, producing a distinctive texture. Venchi offers it in multiple flavors and considers it a signature icon.
Cremino
Cremino is a layered chocolate confection. Venchi’s version is characterized by multiple layers and a square shape, reflecting the company’s interest in combining different textures and flavors.
Nougatine
Nougatine combines caramelized hazelnuts with dark chocolate and remains one of Venchi’s historic specialties.
Other Offerings
- Chocolate Bars: Produced using dark, milk, and white chocolate, often incorporating nuts, fruits, creams, and other ingredients.
- Chocolate Spreads: Including Suprema/Nocciolata-style spreads, extending the brand beyond gift chocolates into everyday consumption.
- Gelato: Increasingly central to Venchi’s retail concept, allowing customers to consume freshly prepared Italian gelato alongside their chocolate purchases.
The “Chocogelateria” Concept
A conventional premium chocolatier might primarily sell boxed chocolates. Venchi instead combines Chocolate + Gelato + Café-style experience + Italian design in its retail spaces, known as the Chocogelateria.
Venchi describes its stores as immersive environments designed around Italian style, chocolate, and gelato. The goal is to make the brand feel like an experience, rather than simply a place where consumers purchase packaged chocolate. This strategy has helped Venchi expand into major international shopping destinations. 3
International Expansion
Although Venchi remains strongly associated with Piedmont and Italy, the company has developed a substantial international retail presence. Venchi operates in more than 70 countries, with stores in cities including London, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Jakarta. The company’s philosophy involves bringing the Italian lifestyle and flavors to consumers worldwide, reproducing an Italian lifestyle experience rather than just exporting Italian food products.
Brand Philosophy
Venchi’s brand identity rests on four major pillars:
- Italian Craftsmanship: Emphasis on traditional artistry and confectionery expertise.
- Premium Ingredients: Focus on natural ingredients, especially Piedmont hazelnuts, pistachios, and cocoa.
- Innovation: Despite its 19th-century origins, Venchi introduces more than 20 new recipes each year across numerous chocolate variations.
- Pleasure and Conviviality: Strong associations with joy, sharing, and indulgence, visible in the social nature of the Chocogelateria concept.
Ingredients and Product Standards
Venchi produces its chocolate in its factory in Piedmont, Italy, using carefully selected ingredients. The company’s stated product philosophy emphasizes:
- Natural ingredients
- Piedmontese hazelnuts
- Pistachios
- Cocoa
- Mediterranean-inspired recipes
- No palm oil
- No artificial colors
- No artificial aromas
- No artificial preservatives
- Gluten-free options
- Plant-based options
Note: These claims apply to the company’s general ranges; individual products may have different ingredient and allergen profiles.
Sustainability
Sustainability is a growing component of Venchi’s corporate strategy. Initiatives include:
- Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa
- Greater traceability of raw materials
- Sustainable packaging (FSC-certified paper, recycled materials)
- Food-waste reduction
- Energy-efficiency improvements
- Carbon emission reduction efforts
- Sustainable sourcing for vanilla and hazelnuts
Venchi publishes sustainability reporting covering environmental, social, and ethical issues. Its U.S. site currently states a target of 100% Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa by 2027. 4
Market Positioning
Venchi occupies a unique position in the chocolate market. It is distinct from mass-market manufacturers due to its focus on craftsmanship and boutique retail, yet it differs from purely artisanal chocolatiers by leveraging international retail, contemporary product development, and experiential stores.
Its competitive identity can be summarized as “Historic Italian chocolate craftsmanship presented as a contemporary global lifestyle brand.”
While its closest conceptual competitors may include brands such as Lindt & Sprüngli, Godiva, Neuhaus, Caffarel, and Amedei, Venchi’s combination of chocolate boutique + gelateria + Piedmontese identity creates a differentiated niche.
Retail and Visual Identity
Venchi stores are designed to be highly recognizable, featuring:
- Italian elegance and decorative architectural details
- Rich chocolate colors and gold/metallic elements
- Large displays of colorful wrapped chocolates
- Gelato counters
- Chocolate-making theatrics
A notable retail feature is the chocolate waterfall, used as a visual centerpiece in some locations. The New York store, for instance, is highlighted for having an exceptionally large chocolate waterfall, turning the space into a destination and photo-worthy experience.
Cultural Identity
Venchi’s story intersects three identities:
- Piedmontese Heritage: Roots in Turin’s centuries-old chocolate and hazelnut culture.
- Italian Lifestyle: Communication of broader Italian living through architecture, hospitality, and food.
- Global Luxury Retail: Translation of heritage into a modern premium retail experience.
This positions Venchi not merely as a chocolate producer but as an Italian lifestyle and gifting brand centered on chocolate.
Venchi Today
As of 2026, Venchi describes itself as a company with more than 145 years of history, over 350 chocolate recipes, approximately 90 gelato flavors, and more than 200 directly operated stores in more than 70 countries. From a small Turin workshop to a global network of experiential Italian chocolate stores, Venchi continues to evolve while maintaining its core association with Italian craftsmanship and premium natural ingredients.
