The origins of Tefal trace back to the early 1950s, when Marc Grégoire experimented with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known as Teflon, to reduce friction on fishing equipment. At his wife’s suggestion, he applied the same coating to cooking pans, resulting in the first practical non-stick frying pan. He patented the technology in 1954 and founded Tefal in Sarcelles, France, in 1956.12 The name Tefal is a portmanteau of “Teflon” and “Aluminium”, reflecting the materials used in its original product line.1
