1980 — Founding
Unicurd began operations in 1980 as a Singaporean tofu manufacturer. Its first production facility was located in Aljunied. One of the company’s major innovations was the introduction of what Vitasoy describes as Singapore’s first hygienically packed, pasteurized silken tofu, sold in sealed boxes and tubes. This allowed tofu to be packaged under controlled hygienic conditions rather than being sold primarily through traditional open-market formats. The product quickly gained popularity.
1982 — Expansion to Ang Mo Kio
Demand grew rapidly during Unicurd’s first two years. By 1982, the company had outgrown its original premises and expanded to a larger manufacturing facility in Ang Mo Kio.
1996 — Senoko manufacturing facility
In 1996, Unicurd established a larger manufacturing facility in Senoko. Vitasoy’s history of the company describes the facility as approximately 2,700 square metres, with an investment of more than S$3 million in tofu-manufacturing equipment. The move represented an important stage in Unicurd’s transition toward large-scale, technologically advanced tofu manufacturing. 1
1999 — Quality and food-safety certifications
Unicurd achieved ISO and HACCP certifications concurrently in 1999, becoming, according to the Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association, the first local SME food company in Singapore to achieve the two certifications concurrently. The company also states that its products are Halal certified.
2008 — Acquisition by Vitasoy
A major turning point came in April 2008, when Vitasoy International Holdings Limited acquired the entire issued share capital of Unicurd. Unicurd consequently became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Vitasoy Group. 2 This brought a distinctly Singaporean tofu business into the wider Vitasoy group, whose operations span plant-based food and beverage products across Asia and other markets.
Present day
Unicurd continues to be sold in Singapore as a major tofu and soy-food brand. The company’s corporate identity has also evolved: Singapore government Healthier Choice Scheme records now identify the operating company as Vitasoy International Singapore Pte Ltd, formerly known as Unicurd Food Company Pte. Ltd.
Products
Unicurd’s portfolio is primarily centred around different forms of tofu and traditional soy foods.
Tofu
Its current range includes:
- Silken Tofu
- Extra Smooth Silken Tofu
- Chinese Tofu
- Omega Silken Tofu
- Pressed Tofu
- Organic Tofu
- Baiye Tofu
The products are available in different textures and formats, including boxes, tubes and twin packs.
Egg tofu
Unicurd also produces:
- Egg Tofu
- Omega Egg Tofu
- Fragrant Egg Tofu
Some varieties are formulated with additional nutrients such as omega-3 and omega-6. Singapore’s Healthier Choice Scheme listings include Unicurd egg-tofu products in its recognized product range.
Tau kwa and pressed products
Another important part of the portfolio is tau kwa, a firmer and more compact form of tofu commonly used in Singaporean and Southeast Asian cooking. Products include:
- Firm Tau Kwa
- Omega Tau Kwa
- Organic Tau Kwa
- Pressed Tofu
- Firm Springy Pressed Tofu
Speciality and dessert products
Beyond conventional tofu, Unicurd has also offered products such as:
- Baiye Tofu
- Braised Tau Kwa
- Deep Fried Tofu / Tauhu Goreng
- Soy Pudding
- Almond Soy Pudding
- Natural Soy Pudding
The company’s current product catalogue also includes fresh noodles, such as Ipoh Hor Fun, Kway Teow and rice vermicelli, although tofu remains the brand’s most recognizable category. 3
Manufacturing and technology
One of Unicurd’s distinguishing characteristics is its emphasis on automated tofu production. The company describes itself as the first tofu manufacturer in Singapore to implement automated production lines. Its manufacturing approach combines automation with trained personnel and quality-control systems.
This is particularly significant because tofu is traditionally associated with relatively small-scale production. Unicurd helped adapt the product to a modern packaged-food environment, emphasizing:
- controlled manufacturing;
- hygienic packaging;
- pasteurization;
- consistent texture and quality;
- refrigerated distribution; and
- standardized food-safety procedures.
Food safety and certifications
Food safety has historically been a central part of Unicurd’s positioning. The brand’s corporate history states that it achieved ISO and HACCP certifications in 1999. The Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association also notes Unicurd’s Halal certification and its Healthier Choice-related credentials.
For example, Unicurd’s regular silken tofu is currently listed by FairPrice as Halal, vegetarian, trans-fat-free and Healthier Choice.
Position in Singapore
Unicurd is particularly notable because tofu is a deeply established ingredient in Singaporean and broader Asian cuisine. Rather than positioning tofu exclusively as a vegetarian or alternative-protein product, Unicurd has historically treated it as an everyday household food. Its products can be used in dishes ranging from soups and stews to stir-fries, salads, desserts and traditional Chinese/Southeast Asian dishes. Its silken tofu, for example, is marketed for soups, salads, dressings, smoothies and desserts.
The brand’s long presence in Singapore has consequently made “Unicurd” strongly associated with packaged tofu and beancurd among local consumers.
Brand significance
Unicurd’s importance goes beyond its product range. Its history illustrates the modernization of a traditional Asian food. Historically, tofu was commonly produced and sold through traditional food markets. Unicurd’s innovation was to take that familiar product and introduce:
traditional tofu → industrial production → pasteurization → sealed packaging → refrigerated retail → nationwide consumer brand
That model helped make tofu more convenient for modern households while addressing concerns around hygiene, shelf life and consistency. The company was subsequently recognized by International Enterprise Singapore as a “Tasty Brand Ambassador”, reflecting its role in promoting Singaporean food products internationally.
Relationship with Vitasoy
It is important to distinguish Unicurd the brand from Unicurd Food Company the former corporate entity. Vitasoy acquired Unicurd in 2008. Current Singapore government records identify the operating company as:
Vitasoy International Singapore Pte Ltd (Previously known as Unicurd Food Company Pte. Ltd.)
Thus, Unicurd remains a consumer-facing brand within the Vitasoy group, while the corporate entity has subsequently been renamed. Vitasoy’s Singapore operation currently presents Unicurd alongside its wider plant-based food and beverage business.

Unicurd products are widely available through Singapore’s mainstream grocery retail channel. For example, NTUC FairPrice currently lists Unicurd Silken Tofu as a Singapore-origin product, while RedMart carries a broader selection of Unicurd products. 4
Brand identity
At its core, Unicurd can be characterized by four themes:
Singaporean heritage — Established in 1980 and developed specifically within Singapore’s food market.
Tofu specialization — Unlike broad grocery brands, Unicurd built its identity around tofu and related soy foods.
Food technology — The brand was an early adopter of hygienic sealed packaging, pasteurization and automated tofu production.
Plant-based nutrition — Its products are based predominantly on soybeans and occupy an important place in Singapore’s plant-based food ecosystem.
