History
Unihertz was established in 2016 by Stephen Xu in Shanghai. Before launching its own brand, the team had years of experience in smartphone design and manufacturing as an Independent Design House (IDH), developing mobile devices for other companies.
Rather than competing directly with Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, or other mainstream manufacturers, Unihertz focused on creating smartphones for enthusiasts and niche markets that larger brands had largely abandoned.
Its breakthrough came in 2017 with the launch of the Jelly, an ultra-small Android smartphone funded through Kickstarter. The campaign raised over US$1 million, making it one of the most successful smartphone crowdfunding campaigns of its time. Since then, Unihertz has repeatedly used Kickstarter to validate and launch new products.2
Philosophy
Unihertz’s mission is based on the idea that smartphones should not all look and function the same. Instead of producing one flagship phone each year, the company develops devices for users who want features such as:
- Extremely compact phones
- Physical keyboards
- Rugged outdoor durability
- Massive batteries
- Specialized hardware features
- Retro-inspired designs
According to the company, it aims to provide more diverse smartphone choices for consumers rather than following mainstream design trends.2
1. Jelly Series
The Jelly series is the brand’s most recognizable product line. Features include ultra-compact size, Android operating system, pocket-friendly design, full smartphone functionality, and one-handed use. These devices target users who want a secondary phone, minimalist device, or a very small Android smartphone.
Notable models include:
- Jelly
- Jelly Pro
- Jelly 2
- Jelly 2E

2. Titan Series
The Titan lineup revives the physical QWERTY keyboard popularized by BlackBerry devices. Characteristics include a physical keyboard, square display, productivity-oriented design, large battery, and rugged construction. These appeal to users who prefer tactile typing and productivity-focused devices.3
Major models include:
- Titan
- Titan Pocket
- Titan Slim
- Titan 2
3. Atom Series
The Atom series focuses on compact rugged smartphones. Features vary by model but generally include IP68 water resistance, shock resistance, outdoor use capabilities, and a compact body.

4. Tank Series
The Tank lineup emphasizes extreme battery life and outdoor functionality. Depending on the model, features may include very large batteries, rugged construction, projectors, laser rangefinders, night vision cameras, and camping tools.
Some Tank devices are also marketed under the 8849 sub-brand. According to statements from Unihertz, 8849 is dedicated to the Tank series, with the hardware being essentially the same aside from branding.1
5. Luna
The Luna series features a more futuristic design, incorporating decorative LED lighting on the rear while maintaining standard Android smartphone functionality.1
Manufacturing
Unlike many small smartphone startups, Unihertz states that it operates its own smartphone manufacturing facilities with complete production lines and handles design, software, hardware development, RF testing, and quality control in-house.2
Kickstarter Success
Crowdfunding has played a central role in Unihertz’s growth. According to the company:
- More than 11 Kickstarter campaigns have been launched since 2017.
- Over 40,000 backers worldwide have supported its projects.
- New phones are often introduced on Kickstarter before becoming available through the official store.2
Target Audience
Unihertz devices are aimed at users who value specialized functionality over mainstream flagship features, including technology enthusiasts, BlackBerry fans, minimalists, outdoor professionals, travelers, industrial workers, developers, and users seeking secondary phones.
Software
Most Unihertz smartphones run Android with relatively light customization. The company typically keeps Google’s core Android experience while adding support for specialized hardware such as physical keyboards, programmable buttons, rugged sensors, projectors, and infrared functions (on some models).
Global Presence
Unihertz sells its products worldwide through its official online store, Kickstarter campaigns, regional distributors, and online retailers. The company has developed a dedicated international following despite remaining much smaller than major smartphone manufacturers.

Brand Identity
Unihertz occupies a distinctive position in the smartphone industry by focusing on products that larger manufacturers generally do not make. This niche approach, combined with repeated Kickstarter launches, has helped the brand cultivate a dedicated global community of enthusiasts.2
