History
Early Years (1853–1880)
WMF traces its origins to Straub & Schweizer, a metalworking factory established in 1853 in Geislingen by Daniel Straub alongside the Schweizer brothers. Initially employing only 16 workers, the company specialised in metal products and quickly earned recognition for quality craftsmanship.
In 1862, the firm won awards for its silver-plated products at the Great London Exposition, establishing its reputation beyond Germany. To expand sales, the first retail outlet was opened in Berlin in 1868.2
Formation of WMF (1880)
In 1880, Straub & Schweizer merged with Ritter & Co. to form Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF). The newly constituted company rapidly expanded its product range, becoming one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of household metal goods.
Growth and Innovation
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, WMF became renowned for silver-plated tableware, decorative metal art, luxury household products, and hotel and restaurant equipment. The company continually invested in manufacturing technology and industrial design, earning numerous international awards.
Major Innovations
Cromargan®
One of WMF’s most significant innovations is Cromargan®, its proprietary stainless steel introduced in the early 20th century. This material is rust-resistant, acid-resistant, dishwasher-safe, highly durable, easy to polish, and hygienic. Many WMF cookware lines, cutlery sets, and kitchen utensils continue to utilise Cromargan®, making it one of the brand’s defining technologies.
Pressure Cookers
WMF introduced one of Germany’s earliest modern pressure cookers, helping to popularise faster and more energy-efficient home cooking methods.
Professional Coffee Machines
Entering the commercial coffee industry in the 1920s, WMF is now recognised as one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of bean-to-cup coffee machines, espresso systems, commercial coffee equipment, and hotel coffee solutions. These machines are widely used in hotels, cafés, restaurants, offices, and airports globally.
