Araven describes its positioning around “Food Safety Innovation”, developing products intended to improve kitchen efficiency while helping professionals preserve food quality and comply with hygiene requirements. 3
Foundation and early development
Araven was established in 1976 in the Aragon region of Spain by two entrepreneurs with experience in industrial plastic injection moulding and sales. The company’s first mould was developed in 1977, and commercial sales to major Spanish customers began in 1978.
Initially, Araven concentrated on products for the domestic/home market. During the late 1980s, it began moving into the hospitality sector, followed by international expansion during the 1990s.
Expansion into retail equipment
Araven also developed a second important business area around shopping baskets and retail equipment.
In 1987, it launched its first shopping basket. In 2005, the company introduced its Shop&Roll range, described by Araven as the world’s first shopping basket with a telescopic handle and wheels. It subsequently expanded into shopping carriers and compact shopping trolleys.
This retail-equipment business became an important part of the wider Araven Group alongside its hospitality operations.
International growth
During the 2000s and 2010s, Araven increasingly developed products specifically for professional kitchens and foodservice. Its hospitality portfolio evolved from conventional plastic products toward specialized systems for food storage, handling, hygiene, traceability and kitchen organization.
In 2017, private-equity group GED acquired a major shareholding in Araven through Araven Group. In 2018, the company opened new premises in Villanueva de Gállego near Zaragoza, with approximately 7,800 m² of facilities, including warehouse and office space.
Sustainability initiatives
In 2020, Araven introduced its Oceanis line of shopping baskets and trolleys using recycled marine plastic sourced from abandoned fishing rope and tackle. This represented an early example of the company’s use of recycled materials as part of its sustainability strategy.
Acquisition by CFS Brands
A major change came in July 2024, when U.S.-based CFS Brands acquired Araven. Araven’s existing portfolio became part of the broader CFS Brands organization, while Araven continued operating as an independent entity. 2
CFS Brands operates across foodservice, healthcare and cleaning-related markets, giving Araven access to a larger international product and distribution network.
Product Portfolio
Today, Araven’s strongest identity is its professional foodservice business. Its products are designed primarily for restaurants, hotels, catering operations, institutional kitchens and other professional food-handling environments.
The company’s portfolio can broadly be divided into five areas.
1. Food preservation
This is one of Araven’s core categories. Products include:
- Food-storage containers
- Airtight containers
- Gastronorm containers
- Gastronorm food pans and lids
- Ingredient bins
- Perforated food pans
- Drain trays
- Shelving
- Storage and transport trolleys
- Specialized containers
The purpose is not simply to store food, but to help professional kitchens maintain food quality, reduce cross-contamination and reduce food waste.
Araven emphasizes reusable and recyclable solutions as part of its approach to more sustainable food preservation.
2. Food handling
Araven produces equipment used during food preparation and handling, including:
- Cutting boards
- Food pans
- Bowls
- Colanders
- Squeeze bottles
- Sauce dispensers
- Grain and spice dispensers
- Food-handling accessories
A notable aspect is the company’s use of colour coding to help kitchens distinguish equipment according to food groups and reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
3. Service and display
Araven also develops products intended for food presentation and service. The company positions these products as combining functionality and design, allowing equipment used in professional kitchens to transition into service and display environments.
4. Transport
The brand produces equipment designed to help foodservice operators transport food while maintaining appropriate temperature, hygiene and food quality. This category is particularly relevant to:
- Catering
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Institutional foodservice
- Central kitchens
- Food-delivery operations
5. Cleaning and organization
Araven also offers products intended to support professional kitchen cleaning and organization, including equipment designed around HACCP-based hygiene procedures.
Food Safety Focus
Food safety is arguably the central theme of the modern Araven brand. Rather than positioning its products simply as plastic kitchenware, Araven designs many of its products around the requirements of professional food hygiene systems.
The company specifically references HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), a preventive food-safety methodology widely used in professional food operations.
Araven says its products incorporate features intended to make cleaning, disinfection and traceability easier. For example, its food-contact products are designed with rounded corners and smooth surfaces to reduce areas where food residues can accumulate.
The company also highlights:
- Dishwasher compatibility
- Easy-clean surfaces
- Food-contact materials
- Colour coding
- Product traceability
- Integrated identification labels
- Cross-contamination prevention
- Food-preservation systems
Traceability
One distinctive feature of some Araven food containers is an integrated labelling/traceability system. The idea is that professional kitchen staff can identify information such as preparation or storage details directly on the container, supporting food-safety procedures and helping kitchens implement HACCP-based practices.
This is important because professional foodservice involves more than simply keeping food in a container: operators need to know what the food is, when it was prepared, how it should be stored and when it should be used.
Design Philosophy
Araven’s design philosophy combines three elements:
Food safety + operational efficiency + sustainability.
The company says it develops products to simplify daily kitchen work while improving operational efficiency and maintaining food quality. This means that many Araven products are designed around practical professional problems rather than purely aesthetic considerations.
For example, a food container may be designed to:
- Stack efficiently
- Fit standardized kitchen equipment
- Be easy to clean
- Reduce food waste
- Allow identification
- Prevent cross-contamination
- Withstand repeated professional use
Similarly, its sauce-dispensing systems are designed around portion control, organization and hygiene, with some dispensers providing predefined doses.
Standards and Certifications
Araven places considerable emphasis on compliance with food-safety standards. The company’s published materials reference HACCP, food-contact regulations, traceability requirements and NSF certification for applicable products.
Araven also states that its management systems include:
- ISO 9001:2015 — quality management
- ISO 14001:2015 — environmental management
These certifications are listed on the company’s corporate information page.
It is worth noting that certification can apply to particular products, materials or company systems rather than automatically meaning that every individual product carries every certification.
Sustainability
Sustainability has become another important part of Araven’s positioning. The company’s sustainability approach includes:
- Durable reusable products
- Recyclable materials
- Reduced food waste
- More efficient food preservation
- Recycled-material products
- Environmental management systems
Food waste is particularly relevant to Araven’s foodservice strategy. The company argues that better preservation can reduce spoilage and therefore reduce the amount of food thrown away.
Its earlier Oceanis range also demonstrated the company’s interest in using recycled marine plastic in products.
International Presence
Araven is a Spanish company but operates internationally. Its current Spanish corporate information says that Araven is present in more than 80 countries, with its central office and warehouses located in Spain and its products distributed through international cash-and-carry businesses and distributors.
Another recent Araven publication describes its products as being sold in more than 50 countries across five continents. The difference likely reflects different reporting periods or definitions of market presence, so the company’s current corporate page is the better reference for its present stated reach.
Partnerships and Education
Araven has developed relationships with culinary education and professional gastronomy organizations. One notable partnership is with the Basque Culinary Center, with which Araven has collaborated on food safety and innovation. The partnership was renewed through 2030.
The company also reports collaborations with institutions such as GASMA and Institut Lyfe, supporting professional culinary education and knowledge exchange.
These relationships fit Araven’s positioning as more than a manufacturer of kitchen containers: the company presents itself as a participant in the broader professional foodservice ecosystem.
Relationship with CFS Brands
The acquisition by CFS Brands in 2024 significantly changed Araven’s corporate context. CFS Brands is a major international foodservice-equipment group whose portfolio includes multiple professional brands. Araven now operates within this larger organization while maintaining its own brand identity and product portfolio.
This gives Araven the potential advantage of a broader international platform while retaining its established reputation in European professional foodservice.
Brand Positioning
Araven can be broadly positioned between professional kitchen equipment manufacturer and food-safety solutions provider. Its brand proposition is not primarily about consumer cookware. Instead, the target customer is the professional foodservice operator who needs equipment that works repeatedly in demanding environments.
Typical customers include:
- Restaurants
- Hotels
- Catering companies
- Bakeries and food-production businesses
- Institutional kitchens
- Schools and hospitals
- Commercial kitchens
- Foodservice distributors
- Hospitality chains
The company’s product philosophy is consequently focused on workflow, hygiene, durability, standardization and regulatory compliance.
Competitive Characteristics
From a brand perspective, several characteristics distinguish Araven:
- Spanish heritage: The company has operated from Zaragoza since 1976 and has almost five decades of history in plastics, product development and professional equipment.
- Food-safety specialization: HACCP, traceability and cross-contamination prevention are central to the product-development philosophy.
- Professional rather than consumer focus: Its modern portfolio is designed primarily around the needs of hospitality and foodservice professionals rather than home cooks.
- Product-system approach: Rather than selling one type of kitchen utensil, Araven offers interconnected solutions covering preservation, preparation, service, transport, cleaning and organization.
- Sustainability: Reusable products, food-waste reduction and recycled materials are incorporated into the company’s sustainability strategy.
