About CRESSI
CRESSI is an Italian family-owned manufacturer specialising in scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling, spearfishing and swimming equipment. Established in Genoa, Italy, in 1946, it ranks among the world’s longest-standing specialist diving equipment companies. Its origins, however, trace back to the late 1930s when brothers Egidio Cressi and Giovanni Battista “Nanni” Cressi began handcrafting masks and spearguns.1
The brand is distinguished by its continued family ownership as it expanded from a small Genoese workshop into an international watersports label. CRESSI places strong emphasis on in-house product development, manufacturing expertise, sea testing and long-term reliability.2

History
Origins in Genoa
The history of CRESSI begins in 1938, prior to the company’s formal establishment. Driven by a passion for the sea, Egidio and Nanni Cressi started producing their own underwater equipment because existing products were inadequate for their needs.
Their early workshop was essentially a small home-based operation in Genoa where they handcrafted diving masks and spearguns. According to historical accounts, some of the earliest masks were constructed using recycled inner tubes.4
Although Egidio had originally worked in banking, he eventually dedicated himself to the underwater world. The brothers’ practical approach—using equipment in the sea, identifying weaknesses and redesigning accordingly—became a foundational element of the CRESSI philosophy.5
1943–1946: From workshop to company
One of the earliest significant products was the Sirena mask, handcrafted in 1943. With various updates, it remained in the catalogue for more than three decades.6
CRESSI was formally established in 1946 in Genoa. In the post-war period, the company initially focused heavily on equipment for underwater fishing and diving.7
In 1947, CRESSI introduced the Aro AR47 oxygen rebreather, marking an early interest in technical diving equipment.8
Major innovations
The historical significance of CRESSI stems partly from the number of influential products it has introduced to the diving industry.
Pinocchio mask
In 1952, CRESSI launched the Pinocchio mask, which featured an integrated nose pocket to facilitate equalisation. It became one of the company’s most renowned products, remaining in the catalogue for decades and is described by the brand as one of the most successful diving masks in history.9
Rondine fins
Introduced in 1953, the Rondine fins are identified in the company’s history as an early pioneering floating-fin design that subsequently influenced the development of other diving fins.10
Regulators
CRESSI also entered the field of scuba regulator development. The Polaris 4 Professional regulator, introduced in the 1960s, utilised a two-stage configuration and emphasised robustness with relatively low maintenance requirements.11
Optical diving masks
In 1965, CRESSI opened one of the early workshops specialising in optical masks, enabling divers with visual impairments to use corrective lenses within their underwater masks.
Early buoyancy-compensation technology
A significant milestone occurred in 1970 with the introduction of Equi-Vest. CRESSI describes this as the world’s first manufacturer-produced jacket-type system integrated with a scuba cylinder and supplied with air from the regulator’s first stage. It is regarded as an early precursor to the modern BCD (buoyancy compensator device).

The connection to freediving is particularly strong as the founders themselves participated in underwater fishing and breath-hold diving.13
Spearfishing
Spearfishing was the genesis of CRESSI. The company originally manufactured spearguns and masks for underwater hunting and continues to supply equipment for the sport.14
Snorkelling
CRESSI maintains a substantial recreational snorkelling business comprising:
- Masks

This extensive range makes the brand accessible to enthusiasts beyond certified scuba divers.
Swimming
In recent decades, CRESSI expanded into swimming and general aquatic sports, offering swimming goggles, training accessories and related products. In 2021, the company introduced its Hydrosports line, applying its underwater equipment experience to a wider array of water activities.15
Design philosophy
CRESSI positions itself primarily as a technical equipment manufacturer with a longstanding relationship with the sea, rather than a fashion or lifestyle company. Its philosophy centres on three core concepts:
Manufacturing
The company emphasises manufacturing expertise, preferring to develop products internally from initial design through to detailed engineering and production.16
Testing in real conditions
Considerable emphasis is placed on testing products in the sea rather than relying exclusively on laboratory or theoretical development. This practice dates back to the founders, who personally used and modified equipment based on their underwater experiences.
Evolution rather than novelty
The brand demonstrates a tendency to maintain successful product concepts while continuously updating them. For instance, the Pinocchio mask has remained part of the CRESSI story for generations, while modern products such as the Quantum mask incorporate substantially newer technologies.17
Notable products
Several products are closely associated with the CRESSI name:
- Sirena: One of the company’s earliest masks, dating to 1943.
- Pinocchio: The iconic nose-pocket mask introduced in 1952.
- Rondine: A historically significant fin design from 1953.
- Polaris: A series of scuba regulators linked to the company’s regulator technology development.
- Equi-Vest: An early buoyancy-compensation jacket from 1970.
- Quantum: A modern mask designed with a focus on field of vision and anti-fog performance.
- Cartesio: A modern dive computer.
- Michelangelo: A dive computer aimed at recreational diving.
These products illustrate the evolution from early handcrafted equipment to modern electronically controlled and digitally integrated gear.18
Italian identity
Despite becoming an international brand, Genoa and the Ligurian coast remain central to the identity of CRESSI. Genoa possesses a long maritime tradition, and the Ligurian coastline provided the founders with a natural environment for testing equipment. The company frequently links its engineering culture to this relationship with the Mediterranean.19
Consequently, the brand occupies a distinct position: Italian in origin and design heritage, yet international in distribution and use. CRESSI maintains that it still manufactures a significant proportion of its products in Italy while serving customers globally through its international organisation.20
Ownership and the Cressi family
CRESSI remains entirely family-owned, tracing its leadership through successive generations. Key modern figures include Antonio Cressi and Marco Cressi, who represents the third generation involved in the company’s leadership.21
This family ownership is integral to the brand’s image, portraying a business where history, manufacturing culture and product development remain interconnected rather than evolving into a purely financial or conglomerate-owned entity.
Global presence
Today, CRESSI sells products internationally with offices and commercial operations serving various markets. Its product range covers practically the entire recreational underwater ecosystem: Scuba → Freediving → Spearfishing → Snorkelling → Swimming → Watersports.
This breadth is a key competitive characteristic, with CRESSI describing itself as one of the few companies capable of manufacturing a comprehensive equipment portfolio across these diverse markets.
Brand image
The modern brand identity of CRESSI is strongly associated with:
- Italian heritage
- Underwater exploration
- Technical engineering
- Reliability
- Innovation
- Long product history
- Family ownership
- Practical sea testing
- Freediving and spearfishing heritage
- Accessibility to recreational users
In the early 2020s, the company underwent a visual and brand strategy refresh while deliberately retaining its historical identity. The objective was to modernise its appearance while communicating that its fundamental mission has remained unchanged since 1946.
80th Anniversary
The year 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of CRESSI. The company is using this milestone to highlight the continuity between its early Genoese workshop and its modern international business, showcasing the progression from handmade masks and spearguns to advanced diving computers and freediving equipment.
To commemorate the occasion, CRESSI introduced “Dive Yellow,” a limited-edition collection referencing the company’s history and its recognisable use of yellow in its visual identity.
Market positioning
Compared to other major diving brands, CRESSI is differentiated by its combination of longevity, family ownership, product breadth and historical involvement in equipment development. Its roots are directly connected to the development of recreational underwater equipment in the Mediterranean during the formative years of modern diving.
The brand’s evolution can be summarised as follows:
- 1938: Two brothers make their own underwater gear
- 1943: Sirena mask created
- 1946: CRESSI formally established
- 1950s–1970s: Major innovations in masks, fins, regulators and buoyancy equipment
- 1980s–2000s: International expansion and broader diving portfolio
- 2010s–2020s: Digital dive computers and modern freediving, snorkelling and swimming products
- 2026: 80 years as a family-owned underwater-equipment brand
CRESSI is generally positioned as a mainstream-to-premium specialist watersports manufacturer rather than a luxury fashion brand. Its products span various price points, from affordable recreational snorkelling gear to sophisticated scuba regulators, BCDs and dive computers. This broad coverage serves a diverse customer base ranging from beginners and recreational divers to experienced technical divers, freedivers and spearfishers.
Historical significance
From a historical perspective, CRESSI emerged during the same period in which modern recreational scuba diving was being established. Its formal founding in 1946 came only a few years after Jacques Cousteau and Émile Gagnan patented the Aqua-Lung in 1943.
As a result, CRESSI has existed for essentially the entire history of modern recreational scuba diving. Its trajectory is intertwined with the evolution of spearfishing, freediving, snorkelling, recreational scuba, buoyancy-control equipment, masks, fins, regulators, dive computers and modern aquatic sports.
Summary
CRESSI is an 80-year-old Italian underwater-equipment company that grew from two brothers making masks and spearguns in Genoa into a global, family-owned watersports manufacturer. Its primary strengths lie in its heritage, engineering experience, extensive product range, strong connection to freediving and spearfishing, and continuity of family ownership.
The brand is defined by a consistent philosophy: equipment should be designed for actual use in the water, tested in real conditions and continuously improved. This principle was present when Egidio and Nanni Cressi were crafting equipment by hand in the 1930s and remains central to the company today.
