About DOCKERS
Dockers is an American apparel brand best known for its khaki pants, chinos and business-casual clothing. Founded in San Francisco in 1986 by Levi Strauss & Co., the label played a pivotal role in shifting American office attire from formal suits towards the relaxed “business casual” aesthetic that defined late 20th-century workplace dress.1 Today, Dockers is owned by Authentic Brands Group (Authentic). Levi Strauss & Co. completed the sale of the brand to Authentic on 27 February 2026, ending a 40-year period of ownership under Levi Strauss.12

Dockers was originally positioned between Levi’s-style denim and traditional dress trousers, offering consumers a garment suitable for both professional and casual settings. Upon introducing the brand in 1986, Levi Strauss described it as an alternative bridging the gap between jeans and formal dress pants.1
Origins and founding
The origins of Dockers predate its official American launch. In the early 1980s, Levi Strauss & Co. began experimenting with casual trousers outside its core denim business. Around 1982, a Levi Strauss operation in Argentina developed a line of nautically inspired fashion jeans called “Dockers”, adopting the British term for longshoremen.3
The name subsequently appeared in Asia. In 1985, Levi Strauss Japan introduced a non-denim trouser named “Docker Pants”, accompanied by a wing-and-anchor logo. A Levi Strauss merchant visiting Asia noticed the product and brought examples back to the United States, where they served as a key inspiration for the American Dockers concept.4
The timing proved significant. By the mid-1980s, jeans were firmly established as casual wear in the United States, while traditional offices still expected suits and formal shirts. Recognising an opportunity for a product occupying the middle ground, Levi Strauss formally launched Dockers in the United States in 1986.2
Influence on workplace dress
Dockers did more than sell khaki trousers; it helped redefine appropriate workplace clothing. Prior to the business-casual movement, American workplaces generally maintained a rigid distinction between formal workwear (suits and dress trousers) and leisurewear (jeans and casual clothes). Dockers proposed a third category: business casual, typically comprising khakis or chinos paired with a shirt or polo.
Levi Strauss has credited Dockers with sparking a revolution in men’s dress, moving workplace attire away from the standard suit towards a more casual aesthetic.5 This shift fundamentally altered how millions of men dressed for work.
Association with Casual Friday
One of the brand’s most enduring contributions to fashion history is its association with Casual Friday. In the early 1990s, Dockers distributed a “Guide to Casual Business Wear” to companies and human resources managers. The guide demonstrated how employers could incorporate khakis, polo shirts and button-down shirts into the workplace without sacrificing professionalism.6
This initiative functioned as effective marketing by teaching companies how to dress their employees rather than simply advertising trousers. The result was a broad cultural shift from suit-and-tie environments to business-casual workplaces. Levi Strauss has acknowledged the brand’s role in establishing Casual Friday within corporate America,7 making Dockers one of the labels responsible for institutionalising business casual in the United States.
Product lines and evolution
Khakis
The khaki trouser remains the most significant product in the brand’s history. Dockers transformed khakis from a generic casual trouser into a recognisable branded category characterised by comfortable cotton construction, neutral colours, straightforward styling and versatility. The core proposition was a single pair of trousers suitable for almost any setting, transitioning easily from work to leisure. The brand describes khakis as an enduring American wardrobe staple whose utility has maintained relevance across generations and subcultures.8
Expansion to lifestyle apparel
Over time, Dockers expanded beyond khakis into a comprehensive men’s lifestyle wardrobe including chinos, casual and dress trousers, shorts, polo and button-down shirts, sweaters, jackets, outerwear, shoes, belts, wallets and other accessories. Levi Strauss described this evolution as a transition from a pants-centred business to a broader collection of essential clothing and accessories.9 By the 2010s, the brand explicitly presented itself as a head-to-toe lifestyle label while retaining khakis as its central identity.10
Key collections
Several product lines have become particularly associated with the brand:
- Signature Khaki: Represents the traditional Dockers aesthetic. It is the archetypal Dockers trouser: conservative, versatile, comfortable and suited to business-casual environments.
- Alpha Khaki: Introduced in 2011, this line offered a modern interpretation featuring a slimmer fit, lower rise and more rugged construction.11 It was designed to attract younger consumers without abandoning the brand’s heritage.
- Performance and comfort trousers: The brand has invested heavily in technical features including stretch fabrics, moisture management, flexible construction, expandable waistbands, travel-oriented designs, wrinkle resistance and comfort-focused fits, reflecting a philosophy that clothing should be functional as well as attractive.
Visual identity and logo
Dockers’ visual identity traditionally blends American classic, California casual and business-casual aesthetics. It is less formal than traditional menswear brands but more polished than conventional sportswear. Typical outfits might pair khakis with a polo shirt, leather belt and casual shoes, or chinos with an Oxford shirt, sweater and loafers. This versatility allows the clothing to transition from office to dinner, weekend or travel without requiring a complete wardrobe change.
The logo has historically featured a distinctive nautical motif reflecting the name’s origins. The original identity incorporated a wing-and-anchor design referencing the brand’s maritime inspiration and the British meaning of “dockers” as longshoremen.12 In 2018, Dockers revived a modernised version of its original 1986 logo, deliberately returning to the nautical identity to emphasise its heritage.13 The logo thus connects the brand to its 1980s origins while reinforcing its nautical and California casual character.
Relationship with Levi Strauss & Co.
For most of its history, Dockers was closely associated with Levi Strauss & Co. This relationship was strategically complementary: while Levi’s was synonymous with blue jeans and youth culture, Dockers provided a major presence in the expanding casual trouser and business-casual market.
| Levi’s | Dockers |
|---|---|
| Denim | Khakis/chinos |
| Jeans | Casual trousers |
| Blue-collar heritage | Business-casual heritage |
| Rebellion / youth culture | Professional / everyday casual |
| 501 icon | Signature Khaki icon |
Both brands originated from the same San Francisco company but occupied distinct segments of the casualwear spectrum.
International expansion
Levi Strauss expanded Dockers internationally, eventually making the brand available in markets across Europe, Asia and other regions. During the 2010s, Levi Strauss reported that Dockers products were sold in more than 50 countries, with earlier company materials describing availability in approximately 60 countries across six continents.16 The brand’s international appeal stemmed partly from the universality of its proposition: comfortable trousers that look presentable, a concept that translates readily across diverse markets.
Cultural significance
Dockers occupies a notable position in American fashion history due to its mass-market cultural influence rather than high-fashion status. The brand helped normalise clothing that combined seemingly contradictory attributes: comfortable yet professional, casual yet respectable, American yet office-appropriate. This was particularly significant during the 1990s as technology companies, creative industries and younger businesses adopted less formal dress codes. Dockers became almost synonymous with the archetypal 1990s business-casual man wearing khaki pants, a button-down or polo shirt, a belt and loafers or casual leather shoes.
Adoption by subcultures
Although strongly associated with office culture, khakis were eventually adopted by various groups and subcultures including university students, Chicano communities, skate culture and hip-hop communities.17 This demonstrates that khaki is not inherently corporate; the same basic trouser can communicate different identities depending on fit, size, footwear, styling and cultural context. Consequently, Dockers has maintained a relationship with both mainstream American business casual and contemporary interpretations of casual streetwear.
Marketing campaigns
Dockers has historically been a marketing-driven brand. Notable campaigns include:
- “Guide to Casual Business Wear”: Perhaps the most historically significant campaign, this initiative helped employers understand how casual clothing could function in the office rather than simply selling garments.6
- “Wear the Pants”: Launched globally in 2009, this campaign used khakis as a vehicle for ideas about confidence, masculinity and personal style.18
- “Get Dressed Like You Mean It”: This later campaign emphasised dressing with intention and building a wardrobe around versatile essentials.19
These campaigns illustrate the brand’s evolution from communicating “wear khakis” to encouraging consumers to use clothing as an expression of confidence and personality.
Market position
Dockers traditionally occupies the mid-market and accessible lifestyle segment. It generally sits below luxury menswear brands in price and prestige while offering more polished styling than basic mass-market clothing. Historical competitors and adjacent categories have included brands selling khakis, chinos, business-casual trousers, polo shirts, casual shirts and men’s wardrobe basics. The brand’s competitive advantage has traditionally been its heritage and authority in khakis; Levi Strauss explicitly described Dockers as the “khaki authority” and emphasised its leadership in the casual-pants category.20
Ownership change to Authentic Brands Group
A significant development in the brand’s recent history occurred between 2025 and 2026. On 20 May 2025, Levi Strauss & Co. announced an agreement to sell Dockers to Authentic Brands Group for an initial transaction value of $311 million, with the possibility of reaching $391 million through an earnout.23 The transaction was completed in stages, with the final closing occurring on 27 February 2026, officially transferring Dockers from Levi Strauss & Co. to Authentic.1221 As of August 2026, Dockers is no longer a Levi Strauss-owned brand.
Authentic’s current portfolio includes Dockers alongside brands such as Reebok, Champion, Nautica, Eddie Bauer, Brooks Brothers and Sperry.22
Post-acquisition operating model
Authentic Brands Group operates differently from a traditional vertically integrated apparel company, focusing on brand ownership, licensing, partnerships and global brand development rather than manufacturing every product itself. For Dockers, Authentic announced plans to expand the brand through licensing and operating partnerships. Centric Brands became an operating partner for major Dockers categories in the United States and Canada, including sportswear, activewear, kids’ apparel, dress shirts, workwear and performance golf.25 Internationally, Authentic announced a partnership in 2026 with International Apparel Corporation covering parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean.24
The future business model is therefore increasingly based on brand ownership, licensing, regional operating partners and retail distribution, rather than the traditional Levi Strauss structure.
Brand philosophy
At its core, Dockers has historically represented several key concepts:
- Comfort: Clothing should be comfortable enough for everyday life.
- Versatility: A single garment should work across multiple situations.
- Practicality: Clothing should solve everyday problems rather than exist purely for fashion.
- American casualness: The brand has strong roots in California and American casual culture.
- Professional informality: Dockers helped establish the idea that one can look professional without wearing a suit.
- Timelessness: Rather than chasing every fashion trend, the brand relies heavily on wardrobe staples.
These principles explain why the khaki remains central to Dockers decades after its launch.

Today, Dockers is best understood not merely as a khaki-pants company but as an American casual-lifestyle brand built around versatile, comfortable clothing. Its historical identity has evolved through distinct phases:
- 1980s: Khaki alternative to jeans and dress trousers
- 1990s: Symbol of business casual and Casual Friday

Its enduring significance lies in making the khaki trouser culturally acceptable as everyday professional attire, a change that ultimately influenced how millions of people dress for both work and leisure.
