About Pandora
Pandora A/S, commonly referred to as Pandora, is a Danish jewellery manufacturer and retailer recognised as the world’s largest jewellery brand by volume of pieces sold. Established in 1982 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the company designs, manufactures and markets hand-finished jewellery using high-quality materials. It positions its offerings as “accessible luxury”, providing premium jewellery at price points intended for a broad consumer base. Pandora currently operates in more than 100 countries through over 7,000 points of sale, including approximately 2,800 concept stores, and employs around 39,000 people globally.
History
Pandora was founded in 1982 by Danish goldsmith Per Enevoldsen and his wife Winnie Liljeborg. The couple initially opened a small jewellery shop in Copenhagen named Populair Smykker (“Popular Jewellery”). In its early years, the business primarily focused on importing jewellery from Thailand for both retail and wholesale distribution within Denmark.
By 1987, the company had transitioned entirely to wholesale operations and appointed its first in-house designer, marking the beginning of original collection development. In 1989, Pandora commenced manufacturing in Thailand, establishing the foundation for its vertically integrated production model.
A significant milestone occurred in 2000 with the introduction of the customisable charm bracelet concept in Denmark. This innovation allowed customers to personalise bracelets by selecting individual charms representing memories, milestones or personal interests. The concept achieved rapid international success and propelled Pandora to become one of the fastest-growing jewellery companies worldwide.
Throughout the 2000s, Pandora expanded into key international markets, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, China and Italy. In 2010, the company was listed on the Nasdaq Copenhagen stock exchange.
