History
Vans was established on 16 March 1966 when the Van Doren brothers and their partners opened the first Van Doren Rubber Company store in Anaheim, California. Unlike most shoe companies at the time, Vans manufactured shoes on-site and sold them directly to customers. On opening day, customers ordered shoes in the morning and returned later that day to collect them because the shoes were made after purchase.1
During the early 1970s, skateboarders in Southern California began wearing Vans because of the shoes’ durable construction and high-grip rubber soles. This grassroots adoption transformed Vans into the footwear of choice for the growing skateboarding community.2
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Vans expanded its lineup with several iconic shoe models that remain popular today. The brand also became closely associated with BMX riders, surfers, musicians, and artists, helping shape youth and street culture.3
In 2004, Vans became part of VF Corporation, joining a portfolio of major outdoor and lifestyle brands while maintaining its skateboarding identity.4
Meaning of “Off The Wall”
The phrase “Off The Wall” originated in the skateboarding community during the 1970s. It referred to skateboarders performing tricks by riding up and off empty swimming pool walls. Vans adopted the phrase as its slogan, symbolising creativity, individuality, and freedom of expression.5

Vans in Music and Fashion
Vans became a symbol of punk rock, alternative rock, hip-hop, and streetwear throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Musicians, artists, and fashion enthusiasts embraced its simple, affordable, and customisable designs.
The brand has collaborated with numerous artists, designers, entertainment franchises, and fashion labels, producing limited-edition collections that blend skate culture with contemporary fashion.8
Vans Warped Tour
One of the brand’s most recognisable cultural contributions was the Vans Warped Tour, a travelling music festival that became synonymous with punk rock, alternative music, and skate culture. Beginning as a sponsorship in the mid-1990s, the festival helped introduce countless emerging bands and became a major youth culture event.9
