Origins in Chinatown
Woh Hup’s story began in 1936, when founder Chou Yeng Lan operated a small noodle house in Singapore’s Chinatown area. Chou had arrived in Singapore from China in the early 1920s and established a noodle business on New Bridge Road.
The noodle shop became known for its noodles, particularly its longevity noodles, which were associated with celebrations and symbols of happiness, health and prosperity. Customers began asking to purchase the noodles to take home, creating an opportunity to produce and package them on a larger scale.
Chou subsequently travelled to Hong Kong to learn traditional dry-noodle production techniques. After returning to Singapore, he built his own charcoal kiln for drying noodles and eventually expanded the business into a factory at Everton Road.
From noodles to sauces
One of the most important developments in Woh Hup’s history was its move from noodles into sauce manufacturing.
At the time, local cooks and noodle sellers commonly relied on imported sauces, particularly products from Hong Kong. Chou saw an opportunity to develop sauces locally that could complement his noodles and suit the tastes of Singaporean consumers. He therefore worked with food-preservation and sauce-making specialists to develop his own recipes. 4
This eventually led to the production of products such as oyster sauce and other signature Asian sauces. The sauces became popular not only among households but also among restaurants, helping transform Woh Hup from a noodle producer into a broader food-manufacturing company.
Expansion into a modern food company
Over subsequent decades, Woh Hup expanded its product portfolio beyond traditional noodles and sauces.
Today, the company describes its major product categories as:
- Oyster sauces
- Chilli sauces
- Convenience sauces
- Concentrated stocks
- Soy sauces
- Ready-to-cook sauces
- Instant noodles
The company has also developed an international distribution network, taking Singapore-origin Asian flavours into overseas markets.
Oyster sauce
Oyster sauce is one of Woh Hup’s signature product categories. It reflects the company’s historical transition from noodle-making into sauce production and remains closely associated with the brand.
It is commonly used in dishes such as stir-fried vegetables, noodles, meat and seafood.
Soy sauce
Woh Hup produces soy-based sauces designed for everyday Asian cooking. These products form part of the brand’s broader range of traditional Asian seasonings.
Chilli sauces
Chilli sauce is another major part of the Woh Hup portfolio, reflecting the importance of chilli-based condiments in Singaporean and Southeast Asian cuisine.
Ready-to-cook sauces
The company has increasingly emphasised convenience. Ready-to-cook sauces allow consumers to prepare dishes inspired by Asian cuisines without having to assemble every seasoning individually.
Concentrated stocks
Woh Hup also produces concentrated stocks intended to provide flavour for soups, noodles, sauces and other dishes.
Instant noodles and dried noodles
Noodles are historically important to Woh Hup because the company originated as a noodle business. Its modern portfolio therefore retains noodles alongside its sauce and seasoning products.
Brand identity
Woh Hup’s identity is strongly connected with Singapore’s food culture.
Rather than positioning itself simply as an international packaged-food company, the brand’s heritage story emphasises its origins in a small Chinatown noodle shop and its evolution alongside Singapore’s development.
Its philosophy can broadly be understood as:
Traditional Asian flavours + Singaporean heritage + modern convenience
This combination has allowed Woh Hup to sell products that are familiar to older generations while also making Asian cooking easier for contemporary consumers.
The company describes its objective as transforming time-honoured Asian flavours into modern classics.
Singapore heritage
Woh Hup is regarded as one of Singapore’s long-established food brands.
Its oyster sauce and dried noodles were included in the National Heritage Board’s “50 Made in Singapore Products” exhibition in 2015. The company has subsequently received recognition as a leading Singaporean sauce brand, including being named a Top Influential Brand in Singapore in the Sauces category in 2018 and 2023, according to the company. 5
This heritage positioning is significant because Woh Hup represents a broader story about Singapore’s transformation from a trading port into a modern food-manufacturing economy.
International presence
Although Woh Hup originated as a local Singaporean business, the company has developed an international customer base.
As of 2024, Woh Hup said its sauces and other products were distributed in more than 20 countries, spanning markets including: 3
- Singapore
- Other Asian markets
- India
- Europe
- United States
- Australia
- Middle East
This internationalisation is particularly relevant to the brand because Asian cuisines have become increasingly global. Products such as oyster sauce, soy sauce and chilli sauce can serve both consumers familiar with Asian cooking and international consumers experimenting with Asian recipes.
Manufacturing and business model
Woh Hup operates primarily as a food manufacturer and branded packaged-food company.
Its business model combines:
- Recipe development — preserving traditional Asian flavour profiles.
- Food manufacturing — producing sauces, stocks and noodles at commercial scale.
- Branding — positioning Woh Hup as a trusted Singaporean heritage brand.
- Retail distribution — making products available to consumers through food retailers.
- International distribution — exporting products to overseas markets.
- Convenience products — adapting traditional flavours into ready-to-cook formats.
This allows the company to bridge the gap between traditional Asian cooking and modern convenience food.
The meaning of Woh Hup’s heritage
The significance of Woh Hup goes beyond its individual products.
The company is an example of how Singaporean businesses established during the early and mid-20th century could evolve alongside the country itself. It began with a relatively simple food business—noodles—and subsequently moved into packaged food manufacturing and international distribution.
Its history therefore reflects several broader changes in Singapore:
1930s:
Small-scale Chinatown food business → noodle production
Mid-20th century:
Noodles → sauces and food manufacturing
Late 20th century:
Local food manufacturer → established consumer brand
21st century:
Singapore heritage brand → international Asian-food business
Woh Hup today
Today, Woh Hup Food Industries presents itself as a modern Asian food company while maintaining its heritage as a Singaporean brand.
Its portfolio spans sauces, stocks, noodles and convenience cooking products, with the company continuing to promote traditional Asian flavours in formats suited to modern households.
In 2024, the company celebrated its 88th anniversary, highlighting its evolution from a Chinatown noodle house in 1936 into an international food brand. 3
Important distinction: Woh Hup Food vs Woh Hup construction
There is an interesting historical coincidence: Woh Hup Food Industries and Woh Hup construction are separate Singaporean companies. 1
The construction company, Woh Hup, was established in 1927 by Yong Yit Lin and grew into one of Singapore’s major construction and civil-engineering companies. It has worked on landmarks including Clifford Pier, Golden Mile Complex, Gardens by the Bay and Jewel Changi Airport.
The food company, meanwhile, was founded in 1936 by Chou Yeng Lan and developed from a Chinatown noodle business into the sauce and packaged-food company known today.
So, despite the identical “Woh Hup” name, they represent two different business histories.
