History
The origins of Nestlé date back to the mid-19th century. In 1866, American brothers George and Charles Page established the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company in Switzerland, producing condensed milk as a safe alternative to fresh milk. The following year, German-born pharmacist Henri Nestlé developed Farine Lactée, a nutritious infant cereal formulated from milk, wheat flour, and sugar. This product helped reduce infant mortality among babies unable to breastfeed and achieved rapid success throughout Europe.
In 1905, Henri Nestlé’s company merged with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company to form the modern Nestlé Group. Throughout the 20th century, the company expanded rapidly through product innovation and acquisitions. Key milestones included increased production during World Wars I and II due to demand for shelf-stable foods, the launch of NESCAFÉ instant coffee in 1938, and diversification into chocolate, frozen foods, bottled water, medical nutrition, and pet care. Through the acquisition of numerous global food companies, Nestlé became the world’s largest food manufacturer.

Its long-term approach emphasises creating value for consumers, shareholders, employees, and communities.

Other commitments include increasing recyclable and reusable packaging, supporting regenerative agriculture, promoting responsible sourcing of coffee, cocoa, and dairy ingredients, and reducing food waste throughout its supply chain.

Key areas of focus include nutrition science, food safety, coffee technology, plant-based proteins, personalised nutrition, healthy ageing, and sustainable food production.
Nestlé in the Philippines

Today, Nestlé Philippines manufactures and markets well-known brands such as NESCAFÉ, MILO, MAGGI, NIDO, BEAR BRAND, NESTEA, MILKMAID, and Purina. The company operates multiple manufacturing facilities in the country, some of which serve as ASEAN supply centres.
Recent Developments
In 2026, Nestlé announced the creation of a 50–50 joint venture with Platinum Equity for its global water and premium beverages business. This transaction forms part of the company’s strategy to concentrate resources on faster-growing core categories such as coffee, pet care, and nutrition.
Criticism and Controversies
Like many large multinational corporations, Nestlé has faced criticism regarding historical marketing practices for infant formula, environmental concerns related to bottled water, allegations involving labour conditions in parts of its cocoa supply chain, and challenges concerning plastic packaging waste. Nestlé has stated that it has implemented policies, monitoring programmes, and sustainability initiatives to address these concerns, although some issues remain subjects of public debate.
